Robert Brian James
Robert Brian James (1912 – 3 August 1944) was a British Army officer of the Second World War. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Order (DSO) three times. He was the only son of Herbert Henry James and Laura Brind James of 58 Norfolk Road, Littlehampton. At the time of his death he was the commanding officer of the 5th Battalion, East Yorkshire Regiment, an infantry unit. He is buried in Hottot-les-Bagues Military Cemetery, Hottot-les-Bagues, Normandy. First DSO was gazetted in 1941 for services in the Middle East. First Bar to the DSO was gazetted in June 1943 for service in the Middle East. Gainsborough is a market town, inland port and civil parish in the West Lindsey district of Lincolnshire, England. The town population was 20,842 at the 2011 census, and estimated at 23,243 in 2019. It lies on the east bank of the River Trent, north-west of Lincoln, south-west of Scunthorpe, 20 miles south-east of Doncaster and east of Sheffield. Hottot-les-Bagues () is a commune in the Calvados department and Normandy region of north-western France. Geography Hottot-les-Bagues lies 14 kilometres south-east of Bayeux. History The fiefdom of Normandy was created for the Viking leader Rollo. Many of the remaining place names are of Norse origin. Hottot is believed to have taken its name from the Old Norse word ''haugr'' meaning ''mound'' or ''low hill''. During World War II, the Allied offensive in north-western Europe began with the Normandy landings of 6 June 1944.
