Robert Baillie-Hamilton
The Hon. Robert Baillie-Hamilton (8 October 1828 – 5 September 1891) was a British politician. Background Baillie-Hamilton was a younger son of George Baillie-Hamilton, 10th Earl of Haddington, and Georgina, daughter of the Venerable Robert Markham, Archdeacon of York. George Baillie-Hamilton-Arden, 11th Earl of Haddington, was his elder brother. Political and military career Baillie-Hamilton was a Major in the 44th Regiment. In 1874 he was returned to Parliament for Berwickshire, a seat he held until 1880. Personal life Baillie-Hamilton married Mary Gavin, daughter of Sir John Pringle, 5th Baronet, in 1861. The marriage was childless. He died in September 1891, aged 62. Mary Baillie-Hamilton died in April 1911. George Baillie-Hamilton, 10th Earl Of Haddington
George Baillie-Hamilton, 10th Earl of Haddington DL (14 April 1802 – 25 June 1870), known as George Baillie until 1858, was a Scottish Conservative politician. Life Haddington was the son of George Baillie and his wife Mary (née Pringle). Charles Baillie, Lord Jerviswoode, was his younger brother. He succeeded his second cousin Thomas Hamilton, 9th Earl of Haddington in the earldom in 1858, and in 1859 he assumed by Royal licence the additional surname of Hamilton. The latter year he was also elected a Scottish Representative Peer and took his seat on the Conservative benches in the House of Lords. He served under the Earl of Derby and Benjamin Disraeli as a Lord-in-waiting (government whip in the House of Lords) from 1867 to 1868. Between 1867 and 1868 he was also Lord High Commissioner to the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland. Lord Haddington died at Tyninghame House on 25 June 1870, aged 68. The Archdeacon of York (or of the West Riding) is a senior clergy position in an archdeaconry subdivision of the Church of England Diocese of York in the Province of York. It is named for the City of York and consists of the seven rural deaneries of Derwent, Easingwold, New Ainsty, Selby, Southern Ryedale, South Wold and York. History Archdeacons occurred in the Diocese of York before 1093; before 1128, there were five serving simultaneously – probably each in their own area, but none occurs with a territorial title before 1133. The title Archdeacon of York is first recorded before 1153 with Robert Butevilain, Archdeacon of York. Of the five archdeaconries, York is one of three which has never split from York diocese. George Baillie-Hamilton-Arden, 11th Earl of Haddington, (26 July 1827 – 11 June 1917), was a Scottish landowner and representative peer. Life Lord Haddington was the son of George Baillie-Hamilton, 10th Earl of Haddington, and Georgina Markham. Lord Haddington was elected a representative peer from 1874 until his death. He was High Sheriff of Cheshire in 1871. He was created Lord Lieutenant of Haddingtonshire in 1874. He was honorary Colonel of the Lothians and Border Horse and an officer in the Royal Company of Archers. In 1886, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. His proposers were Sir Thomas Grainger Stewart, Robert Grey, Sir William Turner, and Peter Guthrie Tait. He resigned from the Society in 1892. Lord Haddington was appointed a Knight of the Order of the Thistle (KT) in the 1902 Coronation Honours list published on 26 June 1902, and was invested by King Edward VII at Buckingham Palace on 8 August 1902. 44th (East Essex) Regiment Of Foot
The 44th Regiment of Foot was an infantry regiment in the British Army, raised in 1741. Under the Childers Reforms it amalgamated with the 56th (West Essex) Regiment of Foot to form the Essex Regiment in 1881. History Early history The regiment was raised by Colonel James Long as James Long's Regiment of Foot in 1741. The regiment saw active service at the Battle of Prestonpans in September 1745 during the Jacobite rising. Ranked as the 55th Regiment of the Line in 1747, the regiment was renamed the 44th Regiment of Foot in 1751. It embarked for North America in January 1755 for service in the French and Indian War and took part in the Battle of the Monongahela where Colonel Sir Peter Halkett was killed while commanding the regiment. The regiment went on to fight at the Battle of Carillon in July 1758, the Battle of Fort Niagara in July 1759 and finally the Montreal Campaign in July to September 1760 before returning home in 1765. Edward Marjoribanks, 2nd Baron Tweedmouth, (8 July 1849 – 15 September 1909), was a moderate British Liberal Party statesman who sat in the House of Commons from 1880 until 1894 when he inherited his peerage and then sat in the House of Lords.
