Rizalista Religious Movements
The Rizalista religious movements refers to the new religious movement and a form of Folk Catholicism adopted by a number of ethnic religious groups in the Philippines that believe in the divinity of Jose Rizal, the Philippines' de facto national hero. Many of these sects or religious movements believe that Rizal is still alive and that he will deliver his followers from oppression and poverty. Rizalist groups have differing views on the divinity of Jose Rizal. Some believe that he is God himself, some believe that Rizal was the second son of God, the reincarnation of Christ. Some of these groups also identify Rizal as the god of the pre-Spanish Malay religion. Some only see as Rizal as a spiritual guide. Leaders of the sect often claim that key people in the Philippine Revolution including Rizal himself were reincarnations of the Virgin Mary. Rizal Day
Rizal Day (, ; ) is a Philippine national holiday commemorating life and works of José Rizal, a national hero of the Philippines. It is celebrated every December 30, the anniversary of Rizal's 1896 execution at Bagumbayan (present-day Rizal Park) in Manila. The Philippine Revolution ( or ; or ) was a war of independence waged by the revolutionary organization Katipunan against the Spanish Empire from 1896 to 1898. José Rizal
José Protasio Rizal Mercado y Alonso Realonda (, ; June 19, 1861 – December 30, 1896) was a Filipino nationalist, writer and polymath active at the end of the Spanish colonial period of the Philippines. He is popularly considered a national hero (''pambansang bayani'') of the Philippines. An ophthalmologist by profession, Rizal became a writer and a key member of the Filipino Propaganda Movement, which advocated political reforms for the colony under Spain. During his exile in Dapitan in 1892, Dr. José Rizal had the opportunity to engage Fr. Pablo Pastells through correspondence. They argued about many things, including the concept of God. Based on the letters Dr. Rizal wrote, it can be said that his concept of God could be summarized into three notions. First, he believed that God existed. Second, he believed that God was '' plus supra''. Lastly, he believed that God was the origin of nature; that is, nature was the expression of God. As regards the first notion, Dr. Rizal made explicit that he believed that God existed. He was convinced that a supernatural power behind all creation had to exist. He wrote to Fr. Iglesia Ng Watawat Ng Lahi
The Iglesia Watawat Ng Lahi, Inc. (; abbreviated as IWLI) is a socio-folk religious group based on Lecheria Hill in Calamba, Laguna, Philippines which believes in the divinity of José Rizal, a historic figure of the Philippine Revolution. It is often considered as the original Rizalist group among the many other Rizalista religious movements. History The Iglesia Watawat ng Lahi, often considered as the original Rizalist group, was established on December 25, 1936. Rev. Fr. Luis Fabrigar and Jose Valincunoza was the sect's first Supreme Bishop and president respectively. The sect's headquarters is located in Calamba, Laguna and has established 100 chapters throughout the Philippines. Ruben Edera Ecleo Sr. (December 9, 1934 – December 20, 1987) was a Filipino people, Filipino religious leader who founded the Philippine Benevolent Missionaries Association in 1965, and the mayor of the municipality of Dinagat, Dinagat Islands, Dinagat, Surigao del Norte from 1963 up to 1987. Early life Ruben Ecleo Sr. was born on December 9, 1934, in Cabilan island in Dinagat, Dinagat Islands, Dinagat, Surigao (province), Surigao (now part of the Dinagat Islands province). He was baptized to the Philippine Independent Church at age one in the neighboring town of Surigao City, Surigao. The Philippine Benevolent Missionaries Association, Inc. (PBMA) is a non-sectarian and non-profit charitable religious fraternal organization for men and women in the Philippines founded by Ruben Edera Ecleo Sr. (December 9, 1934 – December 20, 1987) in 1965 on the Philippine island of Dinagat, off the coast of Mindanao. Upon the senior Ecleo's death in 1987, he was succeeded by his son Ruben B. Ecleo Jr., who died in prison on May 13, 2021, after being convicted of killing his wife in 2002.
