Riverton Historic District is a national historic district located at Front Royal, Warren County, Virginia. The district encompasses 66 contributing buildings and one contributing site in the town of Front Royal. It is a primarily residential district with buildings dating from the mid-19th century and including a diverse collection of building types and architectural styles. Notable buildings include Lackawanna (1869), the Old Duncan Hotel (c. 1880), the Riverton United Methodist Church (1883-1890), Dellbrook (c. 1884), the Carson Lime Company worker's houses, and the Old Riverton Post Office and Grocery. Front Royal, Virginia
Front Royal is the only incorporated town in Warren County, Virginia, United States. The population was estimated at 15,400 as of 2023. It is the county seat of Warren County. History The entire Shenandoah Valley including the area to become Front Royal was annexed and claimed for hunting by the Iroquois Confederation during the later Beaver Wars, by 1672. Some bands of the Shawnee settled in the area as client groups to the Iroquois and alternately to the Cherokee after 1721. The Iroquois formally sold their entire claim east of the Alleghenies to the Virginia Colony at the Treaty of Lancaster in 1744. Front Royal, originally settled in 1754, had been known to European explorers as early as the 1670s, and the nearby settlement of Chester's Ferry was in existence by 1736. The town also had a well-known nickname by the 1790s, "Helltown," due to the many livestock wranglers and boatmen on the Shenandoah coming through the area, who came into town looking for alcohol. The 2020 United States census places Warren County within the Washington-Arlington-Alexandria, DC-VA-MD-WV Metropolitan Statistical Area with a population of 40,727. Lackawanna (Front Royal, Virginia)
Lackawanna is a historic home at 236 Riverside Road in Front Royal, Warren County, Virginia. The -story brick house was built in 1869 for Dorastus Cone, a merchant who moved to the area from the Lackawanna River valley in Pennsylvania. The house has well-preserved Italianate features, including bracketed eaves and segmented-arch windows. Distinctive features that survive include top-floor windows whose sashes rise into the attic space, and a period bathroom. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2014; it was designated a part of the Riverton Historic District in 2002. It is now operated as a bed and breakfast inn. Riverside (Front Royal, Virginia)
Riverside is a historic home located at Front Royal, Warren County, Virginia. It was built about 1850, and is a large -story, seven-bay, T-shaped brick dwelling with Greek Revival, Italianate, and Colonial Revival design elements. It has a side-passage, double-pile plan with matching single-pile wings, with additions added in 1921, to the north and south. The front facade features a one-bay, hip-roofed, Greek Revival-style portico. The house has a hipped roof with dormers added in the early-20th century. Also on the property is the contributing early-20th century garage.
