River Plate Championships
The River Plate Championships or Campeonatos de Río de la Plata also known as the River Plate International Championships or Campeonatos Internacionales de River Plate was a men's and women's clay court tennis tournament founded in 1893 as the Buenos Aires LTC Open. In 1894 the tournaments title was changed to the Championship of the River Plate. It was first held Buenos Aires Lawn Tennis Club, Buenos Aires, Argentina. The tournament ran until 1978 when it ceased to be an official event of the international tennis circuit, but it did continue for another twenty years until it was abolished in 1998. This tournament was ranked next in importance to the National championships in Argentina , the Championships of the River Plate constitute the oldest tennis competition in the country. Heraldo Weiss (31 August 1917 – 30 August 1952) was an Argentine tennis player. Biography Weiss was born in Lomas de Zamora, Buenos Aires, Argentina on 31 August 1917. He won a silver medal at the Pan American Games. He was one of Argentina's best tennis players between the 1940s and 1950s. He reached the eighth finals (fourth round) in the men's single tournament of Roland Garros in 1948. He also distinguished himself in several international competitions, notably in the United Kingdom and in Germany as in Baden-Baden in 1950, where he dominated Gottfried von Cramm and faced Jaroslav Drobný (a finalist in Roland-Garros three months earlier) in the final. Francisco Olegario Segura (June 20, 1921 – November 18, 2017), better known as Pancho "Segoo" Segura, was a leading tennis player of the 1940s and 1950s, both as an amateur and as a professional. He was born in Guayaquil, Ecuador, but moved to the United States in the late 1930s. Throughout his amateur career he was listed by the USTA as a "foreign" player resident in the U.S. As a professional player, he was referred to as the "Ecuadorian champ who now lives in New York City". After acquiring U.S. citizenship in 1991 at the age of seventy, Segura was a citizen of both countries, although he never represented the U.S. in tennis competition.
