River Dee, Aberdeenshire
The River Dee ( gd, Uisge Dhè) is a river in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. It rises in the Cairngorms and flows through southern Aberdeenshire to reach the North Sea at Aberdeen. The area it passes through is known as Deeside, or Royal Deeside in the region between Braemar and Banchory because Queen Victoria came for a visit there in 1848 and greatly enjoyed herself. She and her husband, Prince Albert, built Balmoral Castle there which replaced an older castle. Deeside is a popular area for tourists, due to the combination of scenic beauty and historic and royal associations. It is part of the Cairngorms National Park, and the Deeside and Lochnagar National Scenic Area. The Dee is popular with anglers and is one of the most famous salmon fishing rivers in the world. River Dee, Cumbria
The River Dee is a river running through the extreme south east of Cumbria, a part of the Craven region traditionally part of the West Riding of Yorkshire. Its name possibly derives from Brythonic ''deva'' meaning ''goddess'', or from Dent or Dentdale, through which the river flows. The river rises above Dent Head Farm (on the Dales Way), formed from several smaller streams emanating from Blea Moor Moss, the River Dee makes its way northward past Stone House, where it is joined by Arten Gill, to Cowgill, where it turns left into Dentdale. In Dentdale, it picks up the waters of Deepdale Beck (travelling north from Whernside) before passing Dent and Gawthrop. The river later passes Lenacre and Rash on its way to meeting the River Rawthey at Catholes, near the town of Sedbergh. The old water mill at Rash Bridge is thought to have been an inspiration for the folk song "The Jolly Miller of Dee". River Dee, Galloway
The River Dee ( gd, Dè / Uisge Dhè), in south-west Scotland, flows from its source in Loch Dee amongst the Galloway Hills, firstly to Clatteringshaws Loch, then into Loch Ken, where it joins the Water of Ken. From there, the Dee flows southwards to Kirkcudbright, and into Kirkcudbright Bay to reach the Solway Firth. The distance is just over in total. Together with its tributaries, the Dee's total catchment area is over . The river is dammed at Tongland, two miles (3 km) upriver from Kirkcudbright. This was constructed as part of the Galloway hydro-electric power scheme in the 1930s. Also at this site is Tongland Bridge, built in 1806 by Thomas Telford. The ruins of Threave Castle stand on an island on the lower part of the Dee. In Ptolemy's 2nd century work ''Geography'' it is recorded as ''Dēoúa''. The River Dee ( ga, An Níth) is a river in eastern Ireland, flowing from County Cavan to join the Glyde in County Louth. Legend In the ''Táin Bó Cúailnge'', Cúchulainn fights Lethan at Ath Carpat ("chariot ford") on the river Níth. This takes its name from the Irish ''níth'', meaning "combat". The modern name Dee derives from the town of Ardee (''Baile Átha Fhirdhia'', "town of Ferdiad's ford").
