Ritter-von-Spix-Medal
The Zoologische Staatssammlung München (The Bavarian State Collection of Zoology) awards the Ritter-von-Spix-Medal to distinguished donors and benefactors of outstanding zoological collections. The German research institution has built up one of the largest natural history collections in the world with over 20 million zoological specimens. The award is named after Johann Baptist von Spix, the institution's founder and first curator, and is granted sporadically since the 200th birthday of von Spix, 1981. Museum Witt
The Museum Witt Munich (MWM) is a department of the Bavarian State Collection of Zoology. It is located in Munich, Germany, and has the world's leading collection of moths. Collection The museum was established in 1980 by Thomas J. Witt. His well-known family founded Witt Weiden, one of Germany's oldest mail-order houses. Since 2000 the museum has been part of the Zoologische Staatssammlung München (The Bavarian State Collection of Zoology) in Munich. The collection consists of about ten million specimens from all over the world. It is the largest collection of moths in the world. The Museum Witt has a collection of three to three and a half million butterflies, and the Bavarian State Collection of Zoology additional seven million butterflies. A crew of scientists work at the museum and it has an impressive library. Thomas J. Witt was awarded with the Ritter-von-Spix-Medal in 2001. Claude Herbulot
Claude Herbulot (19 February 1908 – 19 January 2006) was a French entomologist. He was born in Charleville-Mézières and died in Paris. He was a lepidopterist and specialised in moths in the family Geometridae. His collection is housed at the Zoologische Staatssammlung München. His life He was born in Charleville-Mézières in 1908 in the Ardennes and his earliest works were on the lepidopteran fauna of the district. Later in his life he visited many afrotropical and oriental countries and spent time in Madagascar studying the fauna and describing about one third of the geometrid species of the island. He was portrayed in his obituary as ::... a nice, clever, cultured person and an active, highly competent lepidopterist. A biography has been published by one of his friends, Philippe Darge. The Bavarian State Collection of Zoology (german: Zoologische Staatssammlung München) or ZSM is a major German research institution for zoological systematics in Munich. Johann Baptist Von Spix
Johann Baptist Ritter von Spix (9 February 1781 – 13 March 1826) was a German biologist. From his expedition to Brazil, he brought to Germany a large variety of specimens of plants, insects, mammals, birds, amphibians and fish. They constitute an important basis for today's National Zoological Collection in Munich. Numerous examples of his ethnographic collections, such as dance masks and the like, are now part of the collection of the Museum of Ethnography in Munich. Biography Spix was born in Höchstadt, in present-day Middle Franconia, as the seventh of eleven children. His childhood home is the site of the Spix Museum, open to the public since 2004. He studied philosophy in Bamberg and graduated with a doctoral degree. Later he studied theology in Würzburg. After attending lectures of the young professor F. W. J.
