Rita Mahato
Rita Mahato () is a Nepali women's rights activist. She works for the Women's Rehabilitation Centre (WOREC) and received the Per Anger Prize in 2014. Early life Rita Mahato was subject to a forced marriage at the age of 14. She had her first child one year later and experienced domestic violence from her spouse. Career Mahato works for the Women's Rehabilitation Centre (WOREC) in Siraha district. The group assists survivors of sexual violence. In June 2007, after WOREC had supported two survivors of rape, some members of the local community intimidated Mahato. The office where Mahato worked was attacked and she was seriously threatened by a group of men. Women's Rights In Nepal
Women in Nepal face high levels of gender discrimination. Although the constitution provides for the protection of women, including equal pay for equal work, the government has not taken significant action to implement its provisions. History One of the first forms of discrimination against women in Nepal began with the practice of Sati, which was eradicated by Rana Prime Minister Chandra Shamsher. However, remaining issues faced by women include gender based violence, child marriage, trafficking of women, transitional justice, unequal representation, and participation of women in decision making. In 2024, literacy rates in Nepal increased to 77.4%. The rate of literacy for females stood at 70.1%, which is lower than the male population's 85.8%. Per Anger Prize
Per Johan Valentin Anger (7 December 1913 – 25 August 2002) was a Swedish diplomat. Anger was Raoul Wallenberg's co-worker at the Swedish legation in Budapest during World War II when many Jews were saved because they were supplied with Swedish passports. After the war, he spent a lot of time trying to clarify Wallenberg's fate. Early life Anger was born on 7 December 1913 in Gothenburg, Sweden, the son of gatudirektören David Anger and his wife Elsa Berglund. Anger studied law at Stockholm University and later at Uppsala University. After graduating in November 1939, he was drafted into the Army.
