Ripon Rugby Union Football Club
Ripon Rugby Union Football Club is a rugby union club based in Ripon, Borough of Harrogate, North Yorkshire, England. The club was founded in 1886, just 1200 years after the city of Ripon itself. The club currently fields four adult teams along with the club's development squad (U17s and U18s). Ripon also possess a thriving junior section which widely regarded as one of the largest in North Yorkshire and welcomes all young players from Under 7 through to Under 16. The First XV play in the Yorkshire 2 league which is the eighth tier of the domestic competition organised and governed by the Rugby Football Union. Yorkshire Rugby Football Union
The Yorkshire Rugby Football Union is the governing body responsible for rugby union in the historic county of Yorkshire, England. It is one of the constituent bodies of the national Rugby Football Union having formed in 1869, the union was formerly called Yorkshire County Club. Counties 2 Yorkshire, previously known as Yorkshire 2 is an English rugby union league at the eighth tier of the domestic competition for teams from Yorkshire. Club rugby in Yorkshire operates without promotion play-offs meaning that the top two teams are automatically promoted to Yorkshire 1 and the bottom two teams are relegated to Yorkshire 3. Ripon () is a cathedral city in the Borough of Harrogate, North Yorkshire, England. The city is located at the confluence of two tributaries of the River Ure, the Laver and Skell. Historically part of the West Riding of Yorkshire, the city is noted for its main feature, Ripon Cathedral, which is architecturally significant, as well as the Ripon Racecourse and other features such as its market. The Borough of Harrogate is a local government district with borough status in North Yorkshire, England. Its population at the census of 2011 was 157,869. Its council is based in the town of Harrogate, but it also includes surrounding towns and villages. The Rugby Football Union (RFU) is the national governing body for rugby union in England. It was founded in 1871, and was the sport's international governing body prior to the formation of what is now known as World Rugby (WR) in 1886. The England national rugby union team represents England in men's international rugby union. They compete in the annual Six Nations Championship with France, Ireland, Italy, Scotland and Wales. Martin Osborne Johnson CBE (born 9 March 1970) is an English retired rugby union player who represented and captained England and Leicester in a career spanning 16 seasons. He captained England to victory in the 2003 Rugby World Cup, and is regarded as one of the greatest locks ever to have played, and one of England's greatest ever players. Johnson made his debut for Leicester Tigers in 1989 and in 1993 debuted for as well as being a late call up to the 1993 British Lions tour to New Zealand. Peter Squires (sportsman)
Peter John Squires (born ) is an English former rugby union player and a first-class cricketer, who played in forty nine first-class matches for Yorkshire County Cricket Club between 1972 and 1976. Squires was born 4 August 1951 in Ripon, Yorkshire, England. He was educated at both Ripon Grammar School and York St John University. Despite his healthy number of appearances, this right-handed opening batsman found runs hard to come by, scoring 1,271 at an average of 16.72, with a best score of 70. He was no more prolific in his fifty six List A one day matches from 1971 to 1976, making 708 runs at 16.46 with a top score of 79 not out. The only ball he bowled in one day cricket went to the boundary, and his 6.2 overs in first-class cricket cost 32 runs without success. Squires took fourteen first-class catches. Anti-Assassins
The Anti-Assassins Rugby Union Football team (A-As) was an invitation team that selected players from the northern counties of England to play friendly charitable matches locally and to go on tour. The team was remodelled in 2004, teaming up with the Wooden Spoon Society (another charitable rugby organisation) to become the ''Spoon AAs''. The Spoon AAs rugby team continues to play a mixture of traditional fixtures with matches against the Old Boys teams from Sedbergh, Kirkham, Giggleswick and Stonyhurst. Special matches against clubs in the North and other parts of the country are arranged to celebrate Anniversaries and openings etc. The team has recently travelled to Cambridge University, Richmond and Taunton, they have played against the Royal Navy and a British Army team based in Germany, as well as a variety of Sevens tournaments.
