Riordan is a surname of Irish origin (Irish language, Irish: ''Ó Ríordáin''; Old Irish: ''Ó Ríoghbhardáin''); ''Rearden'' and “Reardon” are variants of it. From ''ri'' “king” and ''bard'' “poet”, it means “royal poet”. In Irish tradition, the poet was very highly regarded in any royal household, as he acted as a scholar, historian and advisor to the king. Irish (Standard Irish: ), also known as Irish Gaelic or simply Gaelic ( ), is a Celtic language of the Indo-European language family. It is a member of the Goidelic languages of the Insular Celtic sub branch of the family and is indigenous language, indigenous to the island of Ireland.
