Rio Aros
The Aros River is a river in the northern Mexican state of Sonora. It is the largest tributary of the Yaqui river, and is the largest free flowing river in western Mexico. Its headwaters are in the Sierra Madre Occidental. The Yaqui river begins at the confluence between the Aros and Bivaspe rivers. The rugged terrain surrounding the river means it is most easily accessible by boat. Wildlife Large portions of the Aros river are included in the Northern Jaguar reserve, which supports the northernmost breeding jaguar population. Other examples of species that dwell in the river basin include military macaws, spotted box turtles, desert pocket mice, and Tarahumara salamanders. Sonora
Sonora (), officially Estado Libre y Soberano de Sonora (), is one of the 31 states which, along with Mexico City, comprise the Administrative divisions of Mexico, Federal Entities of Mexico. Yaqui River
The Yaqui River (Río Yaqui in Spanish) (Hiak Vatwe in the Yaqui or Yoreme language) is a river in the state of Sonora in northwestern Mexico. It was formerly known as the Rio del Norte. Being the largest river system in the state of Sonora, the Yaqui river is used for irrigation, especially in the Valle del Yaqui. The Sierra Madre Occidental is a major mountain range system of the North American Cordillera, that runs northwest–southeast through northwestern and western Mexico, and along the Gulf of California. In geography, a confluence (also ''conflux'') occurs where two or more watercourses join to form a single channel (geography), channel. Bavispe River
The Rio Bavispe or Bavispe River is a river in Mexico which flows briefly north then mainly south by southwest until it joins with the Aros River to become the Yaqui River, eventually joining the Gulf of California. History Historically, the Rio Bavispe valley was the scene of many Apache raids and their skirmishes with the Mexican military. Missionaries settled the upper Bavispe River in the early 1600s. Watershed The Bavispe River comprises a large part of the northern Yaqui River watershed. Northern Jaguar Reserve
The Northern Jaguar Reserve is a nature reserve at the foothills of the Sierra Madre in Sonora, Northern Mexico. It was established mainly to protect the northernmost population of the jaguar. Location and vegetation The reserve is situated between the Ríos Aros and Bavispe. It covers a total area of about . The vegetation consists of bushland, which covers the slopes and valleys of the reserve. Human population is very low. Access to the remote area is only possible by rugged single-track dirt road, which ends dead in the reserve. Wildlife The reserve was mainly established to protect the jaguar, which is still found in the reserve. In addition, the reserve is home to three other cat species: the puma, bobcat and ocelot. Jaguar
The jaguar (''Panthera onca'') is a large felidae, cat species and the only extant taxon, living member of the genus ''Panthera'' that is native to the Americas. Military Macaw
The military macaw (''Ara militaris'') is a medium- to large-sized macaw, named after its green and red plumage vaguely resembling a military uniform. It is native from west-central Mexico south through northern Argentina and Bolivia. While most wild populations are currently listed by the IUCN as vulnerable - and listed as endangered by Mexico - the species is still seen commonly in zoos and parks worldwide. The military macaw may be bred in captivity with relative ease, and is usually available through the pet trade. Desert Pocket Mouse
The desert pocket mouse (''Chaetodipus penicillatus'') is a North American species of heteromyid rodent found in the southwestern United States and Mexico. True to its common name, the medium-sized desert pocket mouse prefers sandy, sparsely vegetated desert environments. Description ''Chaetodipus penicillatus'' is a medium-sized pocket mouse. The total length of adults usually does not exceed 180 mm. Coloration is grayish brown to yellowish gray and may be sprinkled with black. The pelage is coarse. Tarahumara Salamander
The Tarahumara salamander (''Ambystoma rosaceum'') is a freshwater species of mole salamander in the family Ambystomatidae, endemic to Mexico. Its natural habitats are temperate forest, subtropical or tropical moist montane forest, subtropical or tropical high-altitude grassland, rivers, freshwater marshes, pastureland, and ponds. The Tarahumara salamander may actually be two different species separated by the Sierra Madre Occidental in northwestern Mexico.
