Ring Chromosomes
A ring chromosome is an aberrant chromosome whose ends have fused together to form a ring. Ring chromosomes were first observed in ''Drosphila'' by Lilian Vaughan Morgan in 1926 and in maize by Barbara McClintock in 1931. A ring chromosome is denoted by the symbol ''r'' in human genetics and ''R'' in ''Drosophila'' genetics. Ring chromosomes may form in cells following genetic damage by Mutagen, mutagens like radiation, but they may also arise spontaneously during development. Formation In order for a chromosome to form a ring, both ends of the chromosome are usually missing, enabling the broken ends to fuse together. In rare cases, the telomeres at the ends of a chromosome fuse without any loss of genetic material, which results in a normal phenotype. Ring Chromosome 14 Syndrome
Ring chromosome 14 syndrome is a very rare human Chromosome abnormalities, chromosome abnormality. It occurs when one or both of the telomeres that mark the ends of Chromosome 14 (human), chromosome 14 are lost, allowing the now uncapped ends to fuse together – thus forming a ring chromosome. It causes a number of serious health issues. Symptoms and signs The most common symptoms are intellectual disability and recurrent Epileptic seizure, seizures developing in infancy or early childhood. Typically, the seizures are resistant to treatment with anti-epileptic drugs. A dysmorphic feature is an abnormal difference in body structure. It can be an isolated finding in an otherwise normal individual, or it can be related to a congenital disorder, Genetics, genetic syndrome or birth defect. Dysmorphology is the study of dysmorphic features, their origins and proper nomenclature. One of the key challenges in identifying and describing dysmorphic features is the use and understanding of specific terms between different individuals.
