Rancho Rincon Del Diablo
Rancho Rincon del Diablo was a Mexican land grant in present-day San Diego County, California, given in 1843 to Juan Bautista Alvarado. The name means "the devil's corner" or "the devil's lurking place". The rancho lands include the present day city of Escondido and Rincon Del Diablo. History Alvarado, a native of San Diego, received the three square league Rancho as a land grant after the area fell from the auspice of Mission San Diego de Alcalá. Alvarado, built a large adobe house overlooking Escondido and raised cattle on his land. Both Juan Bautista Alvarado and his wife died in the early 1850s. With the cession of California to the United States following the Mexican–American War, the 1848 Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo provided that the land grants would be honored.
