Adam Riess
Adam Guy Riess (born December 16, 1969) is an American astrophysicist and Bloomberg Distinguished Professor at Johns Hopkins University and the Space Telescope Science Institute. He is known for his research in using supernovae as cosmological probes. Riess shared both the 2006 Shaw Prize in Astronomy and the 2011 Nobel Prize in Physics with Saul Perlmutter and Brian P. Schmidt for providing evidence that the expansion of the universe is accelerating. Family Riess was born in Washington, D.C., one of three children. Erwin Riess (March 13, 1957 – March 25, 2023), was an Austrian political scientist, playwright and journalist. He was a wheelchair user since 1983, an activist for the disabled, and worked as a freelance writer since 1994, authoring plays, radio plays, scripts and prose. Fritz Riess
Fritz Riess or Rieß (11 July 1922 in Nuremberg – 15 May 1991 in Samedan, Switzerland) was a racing driver from Germany. He participated in one Formula One World Championship Grand Prix, on 3 August 1952. He finished seventh, scoring no championship points as only the first five finishers scored points at that time. Peter Theophil Riess
Peter Theophil Riess (27 June 1804 – 22 October 1883) was a German physicist, known mostly for his work in electricity, particularly friction electricity, but also in the field of electromagnetic induction. In the latter work he developed two devices, the spark micrometer (sometimes called the Riess micrometer) and the Riess spiral coils, both of which were used by Heinrich Hertz in his experiments to prove the propagation of electromagnetic waves. Riess was the son of a wealthy jeweller in Berlin. He received his doctorate in 1831 from the University of Berlin. In the early years after graduation he stayed with his father who was ill and helped run the business. Even after his father died, he never sought an academic teaching position. Lew Riess
Lewis William Riess (October 19, 1887 – January 4, 1946) was an American football, basketball, and baseball coach and college athletics administrator. He served as the head football coach at Hampden–Sydney College from 1908 to 1910 and at Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College and Polytechnic Institute (VPI)—now known as Virginia Tech—in 1911, and Randolph–Macon College from 1912 to 1917, compiling a career college football record of 33–39–4. Riess was also the head basketball coach at Hampden–Sydney from 1908 to 1912, amassing a record of 3–6, and the head baseball coach at VPI in 1912, tallying a mark of 9–9. Ludwig Riess (1 December 1861 – 27 December 1928) was a German-born historian and educator, noted for his work in late 19th century Japan. Biography Riess was born in Deutsch-Krone, Prussia (present-day Wałcz, West Pomeranian Voivodeship), as the youngest of five children in a German Jewish family. He was proficient in mathematics and physics as a child, and encouraged by his family to become an engineer or architect. However, he was more interested in world history, and chose to pursue an academic career over their wishes and studied at the University of Berlin under the renowned historian, Leopold von Ranke. In 1884 Riess traveled to Great Britain and Ireland for the purpose of collecting materials for his doctoral dissertation "The vote of the British Parliament in the medieval ages", and received his doctorate at the age of 24. Stefan Rieß (born 9 December 1988) is a German footballer who plays as a midfielder. He last played for FC Lustenau. Career Rieß began his career with FC Bayern Munich, and made his debut for the reserve team in August 2007, as a substitute for Tom Schütz in a mini-Munich derby against TSV 1860 München II. Susanne Riess (born 3 January 1961 in Braunau am Inn) is a former Austrian politician of the Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ). Career In the first government headed by Chancellor Wolfgang Schüssel, which was inaugurated in 2000, she became Vice Chancellor and minister of public services and sports, representing her party in the coalition with Schüssel's Austrian People's Party (ÖVP). The Freedom Party had finished second in the 1999 election, so its leader, Jörg Haider, should have become Chancellor in any coalition with the ÖVP which finished third. However, Haider yielded to Schüssel in order to appease international opinion. Although this should have put him in line to become Vice-Chancellor, he realised he was too controversial to have any role in the government.
