Rideau-Vanier Ward
Rideau-Vanier Ward is a ward in the city of Ottawa, designated as Ward 12 and represented on Ottawa City Council. It was originally created in 1994 as a Ward on Regional Council. Prior to Ottawa's amalgamation in 2001, the Ward was partly in the former city of Vanier and partly in Ottawa, in Bruyère-Strathcona Ward, its predecessor. This ward was created in 1994 from parts of By-Rideau Ward and St. George's Ward. By-St. George's Ward covered this area from 1972 to 1980 (excluding Vanier). It was created from the merging of By Ward and St. George's Ward, and abolished when it was split into St. George's Ward and By-Rideau Ward. Jules Morin
Jules Morin (1914 – September 22, 1988) was a politician in Ontario, Canada. He was a Progressive Conservative member of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1955 to 1963 and from 1967 to 1971 who represented the riding of Ottawa East. He was also a city councillor in Ottawa, Ontario from 1944 to 1974. Background Morin was born in Ottawa in 1914. He first worked as a milkman and later opened a store. Mathieu Fleury
Mathieu Fleury (born September 26, 1985 in Ottawa, Ontario) is the Ottawa City Councillor of Rideau-Vanier Ward, which includes Lowertown, Sandy Hill and Vanier. He won the ward in the 2010 Ottawa municipal election, defeating the incumbent Georges Bédard in a narrow contest, the youngest City Councillor to be elected at that time. He was subsequently re-elected as the councillor in the 2014 and 2018 Ottawa municipal elections. The 2010 Ottawa municipal election was a municipal election that was held on October 25, 2010, to elect the mayor of Ottawa, Ottawa City Council and the Ottawa-Carleton Public and Catholic School Boards. The election was held on the same date as elections in every other municipality in Ontario. Background In Ottawa's 2006 municipal election, newcomer Larry O'Brien defeated former city councillor Alex Munter and then-incumbent Bob Chiarelli in an election largely based on the expansion of Ottawa's light rail transit system. A Léger Marketing poll published by the ''Ottawa Sun'' on May 26, 2007 put O'Brien's approval ratings at 24%, and reported that if an election were held that day, he and Munter would have been tied with 35% of the vote of those surveyed. The 2006 Ottawa municipal election was held on November 13, 2006, in Ottawa, Canada, to elect the mayor of Ottawa, Ottawa City Council and the Ottawa-Carleton Public and Catholic School Boards. The election was one of many races across the province of Ontario. See 2006 Ontario municipal elections. The race featured three main candidates: incumbent mayor Bob Chiarelli, former Kanata councillor Alex Munter and businessman Larry O'Brien. The race began as a fight between Chiarelli and Munter, with Munter getting the edge and 2003 candidate Terry Kilrea in a close third. However, in the summer O'Brien joined the campaign, prompting Kilrea to drop out and endorse Chiarelli. However, most of Kilrea's support went to O'Brien, creating a tight three-way race. The 2003 Ottawa municipal election was a municipal election that was held in Ottawa to elect the city's mayor, City Council, and school trustees for the city of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. The vote was held on November 10, 2003. The elections were held simultaneously with most other municipalities in Ontario. The mayoral election was won by popular incumbent and former Liberal Member of Provincial Parliament Bob Chiarelli. His main competition was that of right-wing candidate Terry Kilrea. Issues The main issues of the race were a controversial Smoking ban, the expansion of the O-Train (Ottawa's light rail system), official bilingualism and the recent amalgamation. 2000 Ottawa Municipal Election
The 2000 Ottawa municipal election was a municipal election that was held on November 13, 2000, in Ottawa. The elections were held for mayor of Ottawa, Ottawa City Council and a number of school trustees. These elections would mark the first for the newly amalgamated city, which added 10 former municipalities to Ottawa. At the time of the city elections, the amalgamation had not occurred yet; the official date of that happened on January 1, 2001. Mayoral race The race for mayor only had two major candidates, that of the Chair of the Regional Municipality of Ottawa-Carleton, Bob Chiarelli and the mayor of the City of Gloucester, Claudette Cain. 1997 Ottawa Municipal Election
The 1997 Ottawa municipal election was held on November 10, 1997, in Ottawa, Canada. Capital Ward councillor Jim Watson was easily elected mayor over two lesser known candidates. Mayor Jacquelin Holzman did not run for re-election. This would be the last election for the old city of Ottawa. Madeleine Meilleur
Madeleine Meilleur (born November 22, 1948) is a Canadian nurse, lawyer and former politician in Ontario, Canada. She was a Liberal member of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 2003 to 2016. She represented the riding of Ottawa—Vanier. She was a cabinet minister in the governments of Dalton McGuinty and Kathleen Wynne. In May 2017, she was nominated by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to become Canada's next Official Languages Commissioner. Her appointment had to be approved by the House of Commons and Senate to become official. On June 7, 2017, she withdrew her name from consideration due to controversy around her selection. Stéphane Émard-Chabot
Stéphane Émard-Chabot is a former Ottawa city councillor who has served as assistant dean of the University of Ottawa law school since 2001. A native of Sandy Hill, he has a B.Comm and law degree from Ottawa and a degree from École Supérieure de Commerce de Paris. After obtaining his degree he became a professor at La Cité collégiale and also head of the Action Sandy Hill community group. He was elected to city council in 1994 at age 28. Openly gay, one of the first issues the city council faced was whether to recognize Gay Pride Day. Mayor Jacquelin Holzman pushed through a compromise that recognized a generic "Pride Day", much to the displeasure of Émard-Chabot and other councillors.
