Ricochet Robots
''Ricochet Robots'' is a puzzle board game for 2 or more people, designed by Alex Randolph, in which the playing pieces (robots) must be moved to selected locations in as few moves as possible, working within strict limitations on robots' movements. The game was first published in Germany in 1999 as ''Rasende Roboter''. An English version was published by Rio Grande Games. Gameplay The board consists of four double-sided quarters, each with a hole in a corner; these corners meet in the middle of the board, where a plastic piece with four stubs holds them in place. Board quarters can be permuted and flipped over to give 96 different board arrangements. There are also 17 chips, 16 with a symbol on a colored background and one multicolored corresponding exactly to a field on the board. Alex Randolph
Alexander Randolph (4 May 1922 – 27 April 2004) was a Bohemian-American designer of board games and writer. Randolph's game creations include ''TwixT'', '' Breakthru'', '' Hol's der Geier'', ''Inkognito'' (with Leo Colovini), ''Raj'', '' Ricochet Robot'', and '' Enchanted Forest'' (with Michael Matschoss). Biography Randolph was a son of self-described "rich parents" who attended private school in Switzerland. He spent his early years in various occupations, including military intelligence and as an advertising copy editor in Boston. In 1961, Randolph moved to Japan and became a professional game developer, performing initial work on ''TwixT''. During this time, he became a dan player in shogi. In 1962, Randolph (along with Sid Sackson) was commissioned to start a new game division for Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing (also known as 3M). Rio Grande Games
Rio Grande Games is a board game publisher based in Placitas, New Mexico. The company primarily imports and localizes foreign language German-style board games. History In 1995, Jay Tummelson began working for Mayfair Games. At that time, Mayfair had begun to import German-style board games for sale, without doing any localization. Tummelson first suggested that they incorporate an English translation, and then that they completely localize the game for American audiences. Tummelson acquired the rights for Detroit/Cleveland ''Grand Prix'', ''Manhattan'', ''Modern Art'', ''Streetcar'', and ''The Settlers of Catan'', which were published together in 1996. Abstract strategy games admit a number of definitions which distinguish these from strategy games in general, mostly involving no or minimal narrative theme, outcomes determined only by player choice (with no randomness), and perfect information. For example, Go is a pure abstract strategy game since it fulfills all three criteria; chess and related games are nearly so but feature a recognizable theme of ancient warfare; and Stratego is borderline since it is deterministic, loosely based on 19th-century Napoleonic warfare, and features concealed information.
