Richmond–VMI Football Rivalry
The Richmond–VMI football rivalry is a college football rivalry played between the VMI Keydets and the Richmond Spiders, representing the Virginia Military Institute and University of Richmond, respectively. The series began in 1893, two years after VMI fielded its first football team in 1891, and three years after Richmond's first football team was formed in 1890. Aside from one year in 1992 in which the game was played in Norfolk, Virginia, the series has always been played at either VMI or Richmond. History Founded in 1839 on the site of the Lexington state arsenal, the Virginia Military Institute, the nation's oldest state-supported military college, first began football in 1873 which featured a one-game season, though the first official team was not fielded until 18 years later in 1891. VMI Keydets Football
The VMI Keydets football team represents the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, Virginia. The Keydets compete in the Southern Conference of the NCAA Division I FCS, and are coached by Danny Rocco, named head coach on December 3, 2022. VMI plays their home contests at 10,000-seat Alumni Memorial Field, as they have since 1962. Historically VMI's biggest rival was Virginia Tech. Today, VMI's biggest rival is The Citadel, as the two teams have battled 72 times, with The Citadel leading the series 40–30–2. The series was dubbed "The Military Classic of the South" in 1976 as a reference to the two school's status as the last two remaining all-military schools in the south, a region once rich with military colleges. Alumni Memorial Field
Alumni Memorial Field at Foster Stadium is a 10,000-seat multi-purpose stadium in Lexington, Virginia, United States. It opened in 1962. It is home to the Virginia Military Institute Keydets football team. History Alumni Memorial Field was built and completed in 1962. The cost was approximately $250,000, funded by the General Assembly of Virginia and VMI Alumni Association. Fiberglass seating was installed in 1974. 1982 Tobacco Bowl
The Tobacco Bowl (or Tobacco Festival Bowl) was a college football game held in Richmond, Virginia from 1949 to 1982. Despite its "bowl" designation, it was not a postseason game, but an in-season neutral-site contest that typically featured regional rivals from Virginia and neighboring states. The Tobacco Bowl was always played in Richmond City Stadium. Virginia Tech (branded as VPI until the 1970s, after its official name, Virginia Polytechnic Institute), played in the most Tobacco Bowls (12), followed by Virginia (11) and VMI (10), but the game hosted the Virginia-Virginia Tech rivalry game just twice, and the VMI-Virginia Tech rivalry game only once. The Montana Grizzlies football (commonly referred to as the "Griz") program represents the University of Montana in the Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) of college football. The Grizzlies have competed in the Big Sky Conference since 1963, where it is a founding member. They play their home games on campus in Missoula at Washington–Grizzly Stadium, where they had an average attendance of 26,978 in 2023.
