Richmond Court
Richmond Court is a historic apartment complex at 1209–1217 Beacon Street in Brookline, Massachusetts. Designed by Ralph Adams Cram and built in 1898, this was probably the first apartment house built in the northeastern United States that resembled an English Tudor manor house. This attractive design made the building a fashionable alternative to more utilitarian apartment complex designs. The complex was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985, and included later that year in the Beacon Street Historic District. Brookline is a town in Norfolk County, Massachusetts, in the United States, and part of the Boston metropolitan area. Brookline borders six of Boston's neighborhoods: Brighton, Allston, Fenway–Kenmore, Mission Hill, Jamaica Plain, and West Roxbury. The city of Newton lies to the west of Brookline. Brookline was first settled in 1638 as a hamlet in Boston, known as Muddy River; it was incorporated as a separate town in 1705. At the time of the 2020 United States Census, the population of the town was 63,191. It is the most populous municipality in Massachusetts to have a town (rather than city) form of government. Ralph Adams Cram
Ralph Adams Cram (December 16, 1863 – September 22, 1942) was a prolific and influential American architect of collegiate and Church (building), ecclesiastical buildings, often in the Gothic Revival architecture, Gothic Revival style. Cram and Ferguson Architects, Cram & Ferguson and Cram, Goodhue & Ferguson are partnerships in which he worked. Cram was a fellow of the American Institute of Architects. Early life Cram was born on December 16, 1863, at Hampton Falls, New Hampshire, to William Augustine and Sarah Elizabeth Cram. He was educated at Augusta, Maine, Augusta, Hampton Falls, Westford Academy, which he entered in 1875, and Phillips Exeter Academy. At age 18, Cram moved to Boston in 1881 and worked for five years in the architectural office of Rotch & Tilden, after which he left for Rome to study classical architecture. Beacon Street Historic District
The Beacon Street Historic District is a historic district running most of the length of Beacon Street in Brookline, Massachusetts, roughly from Saint Mary's Road, near Kenmore Square, to Ayr Road near Cleveland Circle. It includes a small number of properties on adjacent streets, and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985. Beacon Street in Brookline was built in 1850-51 as an extension of the road over the mill dam that was constructed across the Back Bay of Boston, running from the end of Mill Dam Road to Cleveland Circle. The area remained predominantly rural, with small clusters of housing in the Cleveland Circle and Harvard Street areas. In the 1880s industrialist Henry Whitney, a Brookline resident, conceived of the Beacon Street corridor as a broad boulevard, lined with housing, with a streetcar line running down the middle, and began purchasing land.
