Richard Thompson (Royal Navy Officer)
Vice Admiral Sir Richard Charles Thompson, (born 12 February 1966) is a retired Royal Navy officer. Early life and education Thompson was born on 12 February 1966 in Reading, Berkshire, England. He was educated at Meadway School, a state school in Reading. He studied engineering at the Royal Naval Engineering College and King's College London. Naval career Thompson joined the Royal Navy in 1985. He served with 845 Naval Air Squadron from 1989 to 1991, and with 849 Naval Air Squadron from 1991 to 1993. He served as Senior Air Engineer on the aircraft carrier and went on to be team leader responsible for the procurement and integration of the Lightning II multirole combat aircraft. He was promoted to commodore on 27 July 2012. Thompson became Director (Technical) at the Military Aviation Authority in October 2016. Vice Admiral (Royal Navy)
A vice-admiral (VAdm) is a flag officer rank of the Royal Navy and equates to the NATO rank code OF-8. 849 Naval Air Squadron (849 NAS), also referred to as 849 Squadron, was a Fleet Air Arm (FAA) naval air squadron of the United Kingdom’s Royal Navy (RN). It most recently operated the Merlin HM2 from February until April 2020. It was formed during the Second World War as an aircraft carrier based torpedo-bomber, unit, flying missions against Japanese targets in the Far East. The Air Member for Materiel is the senior Royal Air Force officer responsible for procurement matters. The post-holder is a member of the Air Force Board and is in charge of all aspects of procurement and organisation for RAF regular, reserve and civilian staffs worldwide. Air Marshal Sir Julian Alexander Young, is a retired senior Royal Air Force (RAF) officer who served as Chief of Materiel (Air) at Defence Equipment and Support, concurrently holding the appointments of Air Member for Materiel on the Air Force Board and Chief Engineer (RAF). The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire is a British order of chivalry, rewarding valuable service in a wide range of useful activities. Commodore (Cdre) is a rank of the Royal Navy above Captain (Royal Navy), captain and below Rear admiral (Royal Navy), rear admiral. It has a NATO ranking code of OF-6.
