Richard Thomas (herpetologist)
John Paul Richard Thomas (born 1938) is an American taxonomist and systematist, and retired professor of herpetology and evolution at University of Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras (San Juan, Puerto Rico). He described several species new to science, mostly amphibians and reptiles, from throughout the Caribbean islands including the common coquí (''Eleutherodactlys coqui)'', the national animal of Puerto Rico. Early life and education Thomas was born in Jacksonville, Florida, USA, on May 2, 1938. At the University of South Florida, Thomas graduated as a Bachelor of Arts in 1969. Later, he went to Louisiana State University and obtained a PhD in 1976. Research Thomas' research has focused mostly on amphibians and reptiles, spanning several fields from natural history to systematics and evolution. Richard Thomas Goldhahn (September 4, 1915 – November 22, 2003), known professionally as Dick Thomas, was an American singing cowboy, songwriter, and musician. He was best known for his 1945 single "Sioux City Sue", a Number One country hit and No. 16 pop hit that year which later became a country music standard and was included in a Gene Autry movie. Thomas was married to the former Maria McGarrigan from 1935 to her death in 1989. They had four sons and two daughters. Edward John Richard Thomas (14 October 1880 – 7 July 1916) was a Welsh international rugby union back who played club rugby for Mountain Ash. Early life He was educated at Ferndale Board School, Glamorganshire. He joined the Glamorganshire Constabulary in November 1904, and was posted to Mountain Ash, remaining there until the start of the First World War. Rugby career Thomas first played rugby for local Rhondda clubs, Ferndale and Penygraig before moving to Mountain Ash, the team he would captain during the 1904/05 season. He faced his first international opposition when he was chosen to represent Glamorgan, an invitational county team that faced the touring South Africans in 1906. Glamorgan played well but lost 6-3 though if Bert Winfield had completed his kicks the Welsh would have won. He was the founder of Richard Thomas & Co., which later merged with Baldwins Ltd to become Richard Thomas and Baldwins, which in turn was absorbed into British Steel Corporation in the 1960s. Biography Richard Thomas was born 5 Dec 1837 in Bridgwater, Somerset. He was the eldest son of Richard Thomas (25 Dec 1814-31 Jan 1895), a Somerset shipowner and merchant. The younger Richard Thomas attended the Wesleyan Collegiate Institute in Taunton before starting work as a clerk in his uncle's draper's shop in Oxford. Richard Paul Winsley Thomas is a British mathematician working in several areas of geometry. He is a professor at Imperial College London. He studies moduli problems in algebraic geometry, and ‘mirror symmetry’—a phenomenon in pure mathematics predicted by string theory in theoretical physics. Education Thomas obtained his PhD on gauge theory on Calabi–Yau manifolds in 1997 under the supervision of Simon Donaldson at the University of Oxford. In his dissertation research with Donaldson, he defined the Donaldson–Thomas invariants of Calabi–Yau 3-folds, a major topic in geometry and the mathematics of string theory. Richard Thomas (civil Engineer)
Richard Thomas (27 December 1779 – 21 February 1858) was an English civil engineer. He produced a survey of the navigation of the River Severn, he also created a geological map of the mining district of Cornwall in 1819 which went through several editions. In 1815, Thomas produced the first " Falmouth Guide" containing "a concise account of the history, trade, port and public establishments of Falmouth; directions to the public offices, lodging-houses, inns, taverns, etc." Between 1850 and 1852, he wrote 35 letters to the West Briton newspaper, in which he discussed no fewer than 490 barrows, 180 various earthworks and archaeological remains in Cornwall. Barrows destroyed since he had seen them included 7 barrows on St Breock Downs, the diameter of some being 55 feet, the others smaller. Ritchie Thomas
Richard John Harold Thomas (13 July 1915 – 30 July 1988) was an Australian rules footballer who played with East Perth in the Western Australian National Football League and for Essendon in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Thomas was the son of William 'Digger' Thomas, the 1923 Sandover Medalist who also played with East Perth. He played his football across half back and was on a flank in East Perth's 1936 premiership side. The defender shared the "Best and Fairest" award at East Perth in 1939 and then won it outright in 1940. Thomas enlisted in the Australian Army in July 1942, and served with the 13 Field Company during World War II. The International Defensive Pistol Association (IDPA), founded in 1996, is an organization based in Bogata, Texas that governs a practical shooting sport which is based on defensive pistol tactics, everyday carry equipment, and full-charge service ammunition, to solve simulated "real world" self-defense scenarios. Competitors (shooters) are required to use handguns and equipment (holsters, ammunition carriers) that are suitable for self-defense, and wear a concealment garment that conceals the handgun and associated equipment from view of bystanders.
