Richard Arthur Smith, known professionally as RAS-1, is a guitarist and singer known as a founder of Long Beach Shortbus, alongside Sublime (band), Sublime bassist Eric Wilson (bassist), Eric Wilson, drummer Damien Ramirez, and Trey Pangborn. Smith was also one of the founding members of Long Beach Dub Allstars along with Eric Wilson and Sublime drummer Bud Gaugh. Biography Smith was born in North Long Beach, California. He is the son of singer Dora Gail Smith, formerly of the all girl Long Beach jazz quartet Dream, and Union Pacific Railroad worker Richard Smith. Richard Smith was a Canadian soldier who fought in the War of 1812 for the 104th (New Brunswick) Regiment of Foot. Early years The place and date of birth of, and the background of, Richard Smith are unknown. On June 18, 1805, he enlisted in the New Brunswick Regiment of Fencible Infantry. Richard Joseph Smith (1819 – 15 November 1883) was a member of both the New South Wales Legislative Council and the Queensland Legislative Council. Early life Smith was born at Leicester, England in 1819 to Richard Smith and arrived in New South Wales as a young boy around 1824. By 1847 he had travelled to Brisbane and established a boiling down works at Kangaroo Point. In 1849 he established the Town Marie Boiling Down Works on the Bremer River at Karalee, near Ipswich. Politics Smith became an elected member of the New South Wales Legislative Council on 1 March 1853, representing the Pastoral Districts of Moreton, Wide Bay, Burnett, and Maranoa. His term ended on 29 February 1856. After Queensland had separated from New South Wales, Smith was appointed to the Queensland Legislative Council on 3 July 1863.
