Richard Slater Jennings
Richard Slater Jennings (April 5, 1922 – December 18, 2005), also known as Prophet Jennings or simply Prophet, was a journalist at several African-American newspapers and a self-taught painter whose artwork was used on the covers of jazz albums by Thelonious Monk, Eric Dolphy, and Max Roach in the 1960s. He was a friend and adviser to musicians and other entertainers who gave him the name "Prophet" for his sage advice and philosophical sayings. Early life Jennings was born in Youngstown, Ohio. He was the third of six sons of William Jennings and Essie (Strum) Jennings. His father and some of his brothers worked in the steel mill in Youngstown. His mother at one point worked as a charwoman in a public school. As a young man, according to an interview with his daughter, Jennings was a dancer with the Billy Hicks Sizzling Six swing band and was a dance show promoter. Cannonball Adderley
Julian Edwin "Cannonball" Adderley (September 15, 1928August 8, 1975) was an American jazz alto saxophonist of the hard bop era of the 1950s and 1960s. Adderley is perhaps best remembered for the 1966 soul jazz single "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy", which was written for him by his keyboardist Joe Zawinul and became a major crossover hit on the pop and R&B charts. A cover version by the Buckinghams, who added lyrics, also reached No. 5 on the charts. Adderley worked with Miles Davis, first as a member of the Davis sextet, appearing on the seminal records '' Milestones'' (1958) and ''Kind of Blue'' (1959), and then on his own 1958 album '' Somethin' Else''. Ken Goldstein (born June 1969), also known as Kene G and Jack Dempsey, is an American musician, film and television writer, producer, director and occasional actor. He is a co-founder of Planet illogica and CEO of The Six Shooter Company and the author of the book series, ''The Way of the Nerd''. Bennie Maupin (born August 29, 1940) is an American jazz multireedist who performs on various saxophones, flute, and bass clarinet. Maupin was born in Detroit, Michigan, United States. He is known for his participation in Herbie Hancock's Mwandishi sextet and Headhunters band, and for performing on Miles Davis's seminal fusion record, '' Bitches Brew''. Maupin has collaborated with Horace Silver, Roy Haynes, Woody Shaw, Lee Morgan and many others. He is noted for having a harmonically-advanced, "out" improvisation style, while having a different sense of melodic direction than other "out" jazz musicians such as Eric Dolphy. ''The Richard Pryor Show'' is an American comedy variety show starring and created by Richard Pryor. It premiered on NBC on Tuesday, September 13, 1977, at 8 p.m. opposite ABC's ''Laverne & Shirley'' and ''Happy Days''. The show was produced by Rocco Urbisci for Burt Sugarman Productions.
