Richard Murphy (businessman)
Richard Murphy is an Irish businessman and entrepreneur, best known for being the founder of the now defunct video rental chains Xtra-vision and Chartbusters. Early life Murphy was born in 1961 in Kimmage, Dublin. He was educated at St Andrews High School. His first job was as a motorcycle courier during which he got a compensation after suffering a leg injury. Using the compensation and his savings he founded Xtra-vision in 1979. Career After opening the first Xtra-vision in Ranelagh, the company made Murphy worth around 26 million euros by the time he was 29. Murphy left the company in 1990 taking his fraction of the ownership money with him. Kimmage, Dublin
Kimmage ( or ''Camaigh uisce'', meaning "crooked water-meadow", possibly referring to the meandering course of the River Poddle), is a suburb on the south side of the city of Dublin in Ireland. Location Kimmage is to the south of Dublin city centre, outside the ring of canals, but before the M50 ring motorway or the Dublin mountains. It is surrounded by Crumlin, Greenhills, Harold's Cross, Rathfarnham, Templeogue and Terenure. Kimmage is divided between postal districts Dublin 12 and Dublin 6W. Xtra-vision was an online video, film and music store in the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland operated by Hilco Ireland. The company original was Ireland's largest chain of DVR/DVD/Blu-ray rental stores and entertainment retailing company, founded in 1979 by Richard Murphy. It was previously operated by US company Blockbuster. Starting in 2013, 26 stores in Ireland were trading as HMV/Xtra-vision, offering many of the same items as the bigger HMV stores. On 27 January 2016, Xtra-vision was liquidated and ceased trading. The company then operated as an online business and operated rental vending machines across the Republic of Ireland until its closure in 2021. Chartbusters was an Irish video rental chain founded by former Xtra-vision chief executive, Richard Murphy. History Chartbusters was founded by Richard Murphy following his departure from Xtra-vision in 1990. The company was registered on as Chartbusters Limited. The chain rented out VHS/DVDs and games. In addition to this, they also sold VHS/DVDs, computer games, cassettes and books. Stores The first store that opened was in Blanchardstown followed by the second in Tallaght, both of which were classed as superstores and were reported to be generating £6,500 to £7,000 per week in 1994. Ranelagh ( , ; ) is an affluent residential area and urban village on the Southside of Dublin, Ireland in the postal district of D06. History The district was originally a village known as Cullenswood just outside Dublin, surrounded by landed estates. On Easter Monday in 1207, a celebrating group of English inhabitants of Dublin were attacked here by Irish raiders from county Wicklow. Three hundred people were said to have been killed. In the 1520s and 1530s Cullenswood was held by the de Meones family, who also owned, and gave their name to, nearby Meonesrath, now Rathmines. Blockbuster LLC, formerly known as Blockbuster Video, was an American-based provider of home video and video game rental services. Services were offered primarily at video rental shops, but later alternatives included DVD-by-mail, streaming, video on demand, and cinema theater. Previously operated by Blockbuster Entertainment, Inc., the company expanded internationally throughout the 1990s. At its peak in 2004, Blockbuster consisted of 9,094 stores and employed approximately 84,300 people: 58,500 in the United States and 25,800 in other countries. Poor leadership and the impact of the Great Recession were major factors leading to Blockbuster's decline, as was the growing competition from Netflix's mail-order service, video on demand, and Redbox automated kiosks.
