The ''Calgary Herald'' is a daily newspaper published in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Publication began in 1883 as ''The Calgary Herald, Mining and Ranche Advocate, and General Advertiser''. The Canada convoy protest, known as the Freedom Convoy (French: ''Convoi de la liberté'') was a series of protests and blockades across Canada in early 2022, initially organized to oppose COVID-19 vaccination in Canada, COVID-19 vaccine mandates for cross-border truck drivers. The ''Emergencies Act'' () is a statute passed by the Parliament of Canada in 1988 which authorizes the Government of Canada to take extraordinary temporary measures to respond to public welfare emergencies, public order emergencies, international emergencies and war emergencies. The law replaces the '' War Measures Act'' passed in 1914. It asserts that any government action continues to be subject to the ''Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms'' and the '' Canadian Bill of Rights''. Jeremy Hinzman
Jeremy Dean Hinzman (born 1979) is an Iraq War resister who was the first American deserter to seek refugee status in Canada. Born in Rapid City, South Dakota, Hinzman enlisted in the U.S. Army as a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne Division and deserted in 2004 to avoid participating in the Iraq War. "He fled to Canada with his wife and preschool-age son. Now living in Toronto and working as a bike courier, Hinzman faces a court-martial and a possible five-year prison sentence if he returns to the United States.
