Richard Kiefer
Richard E. Kiefer (February 26, 1921 – June 15, 1961)Reference 7 was an American murderer and the last person to be executed in Indiana before the national moratorium on executions in 1972 with the case of ''Furman v. Georgia.'' Crime and surrender In 1957, Kiefer, a Fort Wayne mechanic, murdered his wife, Pearl; he later claimed that he was sick of her criticizing his fishing and drinking habits. He bludgeoned her to death with a hammer before turning that hammer on his five-year-old daughter, Dorothy, when Dorothy approached him to try to break up the fight between her parents. After murdering them, Kiefer hacked their bodies with a knife and then left for Chicago with $3 from his wife's purse and some change from his daughter's piggy bank. Two days later, he returned to Fort Wayne, Indiana, and went to police headquarters to surrender. The Indiana State Prison is a maximum security Indiana Department of Correction prison for adult males; however, minimum security housing also exists on the confines. Steven Timothy Judy (May 24, 1956 – March 9, 1981) was an American mass murderer and suspected serial killer who was convicted of murdering Terry Lee Chasteen and her three children: Misty Ann, Steve, and Mark, on April 28, 1979. Capital punishment is a legal penalty in the U.S. state of Indiana. The last person executed by the state of Indiana was Benjamin Ritchie, who was convicted of the murder of a police officer, on May 20, 2025. The execution chamber, and men's death row are in Indiana State Prison. Indiana Women's Prison has housed women with death sentences. Federal executions take place at the United States Penitentiary in Terre Haute, Indiana; these executions, however, are entirely separate and not under the control of the State of Indiana, but rather administered by the federal government based on federal convictions.
