Richard Hurley (architect)
Richard V. Hurley (born May 19, 1947) was the ninth president of the University of Mary Washington. Formerly executive vice president and chief financial officer at UMW, Hurley was appointed acting president on April 1, 2010, following Judy Hample’s resignation. He officially was appointed the university's ninth president by the Board of Visitors on July 1, 2010. From May 1, 2007, through June 30, 2008, Hurley held the positions of acting president and vice president while the university was in a period of presidential transition. Hurley established Fredericksburg's Town and Gown Committee. He serves as a director of the Fredericksburg Regional Chamber of Commerce and as a member of the board of the Rappahannock United Way, the Fredericksburg Regional Alliance and Virginia Partners Bank. University of Mary Washington (UMW) is a public liberal arts university in Fredericksburg, Virginia. Established in 1908 as the State Normal and Industrial School for Women at Fredericksburg, the institution later became known as Fredericksburg Teachers College, and was named Mary Washington College in 1938 after Mary Ball Washington, mother of the first president of the United States, George Washington. Brompton (Fredericksburg, Virginia)
Brompton, originally known as Marye House, is an historic house located on heights overlooking the town of Fredericksburg, Virginia. The house was built in 1838 by John Lawrence Marye. The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in July 1979. The house sits atop an area of Fredericksburg known as 'Marye's Heights'. The town was about 400 yards from Brompton and was a Confederate stronghold against repeated Union Army assaults on the slope during the Battle of Fredericksburg (1862–1863). Confederate General James Longstreet maintained his headquarters at Brompton. Brompton currently serves as the residence of the President of the University of Mary Washington. Judy Hample
Judy Gayle Hample is a former American academic administrator. She is the former chancellor of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education and the Florida Board of Regents. She served as president of the University of Mary Washington, the university's first female president. Early life and education Hample grew up in Tennessee and wanted to be a scientist. She attended David Lipscomb University, where she was also a member of the debate team. As a student, her lab studies conflicted with her debating so she changed her focus on communications in order to continue traveling as part of the team.
