Richard H. Thompson (philatelist)
Richard H. Thompson (June 28, 1903 – January 5, 1985) was a philatelist from Baltimore, Maryland, who supported stamp collecting at the national level as well as in the Baltimore area. Philatelic literature Thompson had a wide range of interests in stamp collecting, but is best known for his specialized interest in airmail covers of the United States. Because of his writings on the subject he was awarded the Philip Henry Ward Jr. Award. Philatelic activity Thompson was very active in the philatelic community. He was president of the American First Day Cover Society from 1964 to 1966, and served the Bureau Issues Association (now the United States Stamp Society) as president and chairman of the Board of Governors. He also served the American Air Mail Society as its president in 1973 and 1974, and the Society of Philatelic Americans as a director from 1972 to 1977. American Air Mail Society
The American Air Mail Society (AAMS) is a U.S. nonprofit organization devoted to the collecting and study of airmail and aerophilately. History The early years America’s first society focused on this facet of collecting was the Aero Mail Club (1913-1915). It had a few dozen members (including future AAMS luminaries) but disbanded with the Great War in Europe raging. When it reconvened in 1923 as the Aero Philatelic Society of America and renamed the American Air Mail Society (in 1926) it had become a fixture in the hobby. The name was changed because the initials APS was also used by another stamp organization with an even longer pedigree. Along the way there have been at least two dozen aerophilatelic societies in the United States alone from The Aero Philatelist, Jack Knight, Motor City and Gotham Air Mail Societies, John Wise, Aerophilatelic Federation of the Americas, and Air Label Associates. Philip Henry Ward Jr
Philip, also Phillip, is a male name derived from the Greek (''Philippos'', lit. "horse-loving" or "fond of horses"), from a compound of (''philos'', "dear", "loved", "loving") and (''hippos'', "horse"). Prominent Philips who popularized the name include kings of Macedonia and one of the apostles of early Christianity. ''Philip'' has many alternative spellings. Bureau Issues Association
The United States Stamp Society (USSS) is the largest philatelic organization dedicated to the research and study of United States postage and revenue stamps. The Society is a non-profit collector-based organization with a world-wide membership of over 1700. The USSS is Affiliate #150 of the American Philatelic Society (APS). Baltimore Philatelic Society
The Baltimore Philatelic Society (B.P.S.) is one of the oldest philatelic societies in the United States, established in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1889. A history of the Baltimore Society was written by Herbert A. Trenchard. Current location The society was located for over sixty years in its own building, a historic luxurious 1870s era townhouse at 1224 North Calvert Street in Baltimore, Maryland, which was purchased in 1961, which was later named "The Horace W. Harrison Philatelic Center". Airmail
Airmail (or air mail) is a mail transport service branded and sold on the basis of at least one leg of its journey being by air. Airmail items typically arrive more quickly than surface mail, and usually cost more to send. Airmail may be the only option for sending mail to some destinations, such as overseas, if the mail cannot wait the time it would take to arrive by ship, sometimes weeks.
