Richard G. Desautels
Sergeant#United States, Sergeant Richard George Desautels was a United States Army Corporal#United States, corporal who was captured on December 1, 1950, at Sonchu by communist forces and not returned by North Korea at the end of the fighting of the Korean War. More than half a century later, the People's Republic of China admitted that Sgt. Desautels died while in captivity in China, and that his remains were buried in Shenyang, China. Early life Richard Desautels was from Shoreham, Vermont. After growing up on a farm, he joined the U.S. Army at age 17. Originally stationed in Fort Lewis (Washington), Fort Lewis (near Tacoma, Washington), he was transferred to South Korea in August 1950 shortly after North Korea invaded the South. Shoreham is a town in Addison County, Vermont, United States. The population was 1,260 at the 2020 census. Geography Shoreham is located in western Addison County along the shore of Lake Champlain. The western boundary of the town, which follows the center of the lake, is also the state border with New York. Neighboring Vermont towns are Bridport to the north, Cornwall and Whiting to the east, and Orwell to the south. Ticonderoga, New York, is to the west across Lake Champlain, accessible in the summertime by the Ticonderoga–Larrabees Point Ferry, a diesel-powered cable ferry. Kunu-dong (Kunuri) is a village located in South Pyongan Province, North Korea. A key battle of the Korean War, the Battle of Kunu-ri, took place there in November 1950. Kunu-ri was mainly a communication center and a railroad station at the time, and it contains the lateral east-west road which runs from Sinanju on the west coast and Hungnamon the east coast. It is located at the eastern bank of the Chongchon River which parallels the Kunu-ri— Huichon road, and it is also situated at the northern end of the Taedong River valley and on the western slopes of the northern Taebaek Mountains range, generally known as the "Spine of Korea". Eugene Henry DeBruin (April 1, 1933 – c. 1968) was a U.S. Air Force Staff Sergeant#United States, staff sergeant, and a member of Air America (airline), Air America serving in Laos during the Vietnam War, Second Indochina War. DeBruin was working as a "kicker" for Air America in 1963 when his C-46 was shot down. He was a POW at a Pathet Lao prison camp in Laos until he and other prisoners attempted to escape.
