Richard Bannatine-Allason
Major General Sir Richard Bannatine-Allason (22 September 1855 – 1940) was a senior British Army officer. Military career Bannatine-Allason was born Richard Allason Bannatine. Educated at Wellington College, he was commissioned into the Royal Artillery in January 1875 and saw action in the Second Anglo-Afghan War in 1879. He changed his name to Richard Bannatyne-Allason in 1885. He saw further action in the Second Boer War, and after the war had ended stayed in South Africa as Colonel on the Staff for Royal Artillery from August 1902. Three years later, he became a military attaché serving with Japanese forces during the Russo-Japanese War. He became commander of the Nowshera Brigade in India in April 1910 and General Officer Commanding 51st (Highland) Division in August 1914 at the start of the First World War. 61st (2nd South Midland) Division
The 61st (2nd South Midland) Division was an infantry division of the British Army raised in 1915 during the Great War as a second-line reserve for the first-line battalions of the 48th (South Midland) Division. The division was sent to the Western Front in May 1916 and served there for the duration of the First World War. Unit history The division landed in France in May 1916. On 19 July 1916, together with the 5th Australian Division, the 61st Division fought the Battle of Fromelles, designed as a feint attack as part of the Somme Offensive. The attack, against well prepared German positions based on a ridge, was a disaster and responsible for the subsequent poor reputation of the Division. The division later took part in the advance to the Hindenburg Line and the Third Battle of Ypres. Herman Landon
Major General Herman James Shelley Landon, (23 August 1859 – 16 October 1948) was a British Army officer. He commanded a battalion during the Second Boer War, and was promoted in the interwar period to take command of a brigade in the British Expeditionary Force following the outbreak of the First World War. He commanded the brigade during the early fighting on the Western Front, and succeeded to the command of the 1st Infantry Division when his commanding general was killed at the First Battle of Ypres; he later commanded four more New Army divisions during the war. Major-General George Clifton Inglis Stockwell (24 July 1863 – 21 March 1936) was a retired British Army officer who served as General Officer Commanding 64th (2nd Highland) Division. Military career Stockwell was commissioned into the Wiltshire Regiment on 9 September 1882. He transferred to the Highland Light Infantry on 21 October 1882 and saw action on the Chitral Expedition in 1895 and at the Battle of Witpoort in July 1900 during the Second Boer War. He became commander of 153rd Infantry Brigade on 22 January 1912 and General Officer Commanding 64th (2nd Highland) Division on 25 January 1915 during the First World War. He retired on 6 July 1917.
