Richard Bagot (writer)
Richard Bagot (8 November 1860 – 11 or 12 December 1921) was an English novelist and essayist with a prominent Italian background. He was known most widely for his articles and reviews of Italian art and letters. His best known works of fiction were ''Donna Diana'', ''Love's Proxy'', and ''The Passport''. To many, however, he was known solely as the writer of ''My Italian Year'' and of other books and articles on the land he visited many times. He held high honors in Italy, and was a member of the more important Italian clubs. Family history Bagot was the member of a well-known family-line of Staffordshire. He was the fourth child of Col. Charles (1801–1881) and Sophia Louisa (Percy; d. 1908) Bagot, the daughter of Vice-Admiral Josceline Percy, son of Algernon Percy, 1st Earl of Beverley. The Honourable Richard Bagot (22 November 1782 – 15 May 1854) was an English bishop. Early life Bagot was born on 22 November 1782 at Staffordshire. He was a younger son of William Bagot, 1st Baron Bagot, of Blithfield Hall, by the Hon. Elizabeth Louisa St John. Among his siblings were William Bagot, 2nd Baron Bagot, and Charles Bagot, Sir Charles Bagot. His father was the eldest son of Sir Walter Bagot, 5th Baronet, and Lady Barbara Legge (a daughter of the William Legge, 1st Earl of Dartmouth, 1st Earl of Dartmouth). His paternal uncle was Bishop Lewis Bagot. His maternal grandparents were John St John, 2nd Viscount St John and Anne Furness (a daughter of Sir Robert Furnese, 2nd Baronet, and sister of Frederick St John, 2nd Viscount Bolingbroke and Gen.
