Richard Stanley Allen (August 8, 1939 – December 26, 2017) was an American poet, literary critic and academic. Early life The son of Richard Sanders Allen, a writer and historian, and Doris (née Bishop), a postmaster, Allen was educated at the College of Liberal Arts at Syracuse University (A.B. 1961), then at the Brown University graduate school (M.A. 1964), and subsequently undertook two years of post-Masters work. Career Having been a teaching assistant at Brown whilst studying, he went on to teach creative writing and English literature at Wright State University from 1964-8, then the University of Bridgeport. When he retired, he was the Charles A. Dana Endowed Chair Professor at the University of Bridgeport. From July 1, 2010, through June 30, 2015, he served as Connecticut's poet laureate. Richard Knapp Allen
Richard Knapp "Dick" Allen (April 21, 1925 - August 7, 1992) was an American invertebrate zoologist and entomologist. He was academically trained in Utah and specialised in entomology, in particular mayflies. Later, after moving to Los Angeles, California, he added the study of marine invertebrates of the Pacific coast as a university professor. Although Allen was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, where he later studied at the local university for his degrees in zoology at the University of Utah. However, he spent his teaching career at the California State University at Los Angeles, including studies of seashore animals without backbones, mentoring graduate students that researched mayfly taxonomy, finally medically retiring in 1976 following a diagnosis of terminal cancer which proved to be overly pessimistic. Rick Allen Schwieger (born June 17, 1969) is an American former television personality, play-by-play announcer, and voice-over artist. He most recently served as the lead play-by-play commentator for NASCAR's Xfinity Series on NBC Sports, served on an interim basis for the International Motor Sports Association, and covered track & field for NBC Sports. He previously did play-by-play broadcasting for Fox Sports coverage of NASCAR's Camping World Truck Series. Biography Allen was the second of two siblings. Richard William Allen
Sir Richard William Allen (1 February 1867 – 17 July 1955) was a Welsh mechanical engineer. Allen was born in Cardiff, the son of William Henry Allen, and was educated at Christ College, Finchley. He received a private technical education and was apprenticed for four years at his father's firm. He worked as a draughtsman with John Elder and Co. in Glasgow, and then with the Naval Construction and Armaments Co. at Barrow in Furness. In 1890, he visited the United States, and returned as assistant manager at W. H. Allen and Co. When the company's works were transferred to Bedford in 1894, he became a partner and later managing director. Allen was one of the founders of Bedfordshire County Cricket Club in 1899 and was Honorary Secretary until 1919 and President from 1953 till his death. Background He was born on 29 December 1814, the son of Edward Allen (1788-1863) of Leicester and Sarah Townsend (1792-1941). Richard Allen (February 14, 1760March 26, 1831) was a minister, educator, writer, and one of the United States' most active and influential black leaders. In 1794, he founded the African Methodist Episcopal Church (AME), the first independent Black denomination in the United States. He opened his first AME church in 1794 in Philadelphia. Elected the first bishop of the AME Church in 1816, Allen focused on organizing a denomination in which free black people could worship without racial oppression and enslaved people could find a measure of dignity. He worked to upgrade the social status of the black community, organizing Sabbath schools to teach literacy and promoting national organizations to develop political strategies. Allen said, "We will never separate ourselves voluntarily from the slave population in this country; they are our brethren, and we feel there is more virtue in suffering privations with them than a fancied advantage for a season." Richard Allen (abolitionist)
Richard Allen (1803–1886) was a draper, a philanthropist and abolitionist in Dublin. Allen raised £20,000 to help the Irish famine by writing letters to America. Life Allen was born to Edward and Ellen Allen at Harold's Cross near Dublin. He was the second of fifteen children. Allen was an orthodox Quaker and his business was in textiles but his interests were in reform, temperance and the abolition of slavery. He married Ann Webb in 1828. In 1837, Allen was one of three founding members, with James Haughton and Richard Davis Webb, of the Hibernian Antislavery Association. This was not the first antislavery association but it was acknowledged to be the most active. Allen served as the secretary of this association. Dick Allen (21 March 1944 – 6 February 2007) was a film editor who worked both as a freelancer and for the BBC. During his career he received two British Academy awards (BAFTA) for best film editor; one for his work on the TV film adaptation ''Hotel du Lac'', and the other on the TV mini series ''Portrait of a Marriage''.
