Rice Consolidated Independent School District is a public school district based in the community of Altair, Texas (USA). In addition to Altair, the district serves the city of Eagle Lake, the communities of Garwood and Sheridan, as well as rural areas in southern Colorado County. Altair, Texas
Altair is an unincorporated community in Colorado County, Texas, United States. It is located at the four-way stop sign junction of U.S. Route 90 Alternate and State Highway 71. The community had an estimated population of 30 in 2000. History The settlement was established in the late 1880s. In 1888, a post office was opened there. Originally named Stafford's Ranch, the town honored a prominent local rancher. Residents of Stafford, Texas approved the name Altair for the star in 1890 because there was another town that already had a post office by that name. In the same year, Altair secured service from a Texas and New Orleans Railroad branch. Sometimes people refer to Stafford's Ranch incorrectly as Spafford's Ranch. Eagle Lake, Texas
Eagle Lake is a city in southeastern Colorado County, Texas, United States. The population was 3,442 at the 2020 census. It is home to a golf course, the largest private lake in Texas, and the Eagle Lake Regional Airport, which serves light aircraft. Garwood, Texas
Garwood is an unincorporated community and census designated place (CDP) in Colorado County, Texas, United States. According to the Handbook of Texas, the community had a population of 975 in 2000. History The Red Bluff Irrigation System was constructed in 1896 by Marcus H. Townsend, W. T. Burford, and T. A. Hill to draw rice farmers to the region. By 1901, several local farmers were cultivating rice. Ed R. Frnka moved the first building on the townsite in 1901 as well; Townsend offered Frnka the property for his building. In memory of Townsend's friend and Houston lawyer Hiram Morgan Garwood, the community was renamed Garwood. The first chapel and post office in the village were founded in 1901. An extra structure was relocated to Garwood in 1902 and put to use as a hotel. Garwood participated in a land advertising scam in 1906. Sheridan, Texas
Sheridan is an unincorporated area, unincorporated community and census-designated place in Colorado County, Texas, Colorado County, Texas, United States. History Sheridan is on U.S. Highway 90-A and the Middle and West Forks of Sandy Creek, near the southwestern boundary of Colorado County. Although it was developed as a farming community, it now derives most of its income from cattle ranching and the Sheridan oil and gas field. The town dates from 1908, when Hugh Sheridan, from whom the town got its name, sold extensive acreage to the San Antonio Loan and Securities Company. The company, in turn, entered into an agreement with the San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railway to develop the town and promote the sale of lots and small farms. Colorado County is a county located in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2020 census, its population was 20,557. Its county seat is Columbus. It is named for the Colorado River of Texas.
