Ric Forman
Richard ("Ric") Forman is an American winemaker, vineyard manager, and consultant, who has made contributions to the rise of Napa Valley as one of the premier winemaking regions of the world. Details Forman is credited with introducing vintage-dated Merlot, and (along with Dick Graff) barrel fermentation of white wines, to California. Forman was long-time winemaker of Sterling Vineyards. After leaving Sterling he helped found Newton Vineyard. He was also instrumental in the founding of Duckhorn Vineyards. Later, he befriended rancher David Abreu, with whom he co-founded both Abreu Vineyards Management, a vineyard management company, and a winery, Abreu Vineyards. Abreu Vineyards is a winery in Napa Valley, California founded by the viticulturist David Abreu. History In 1980, David formed David Abreu Vineyard Management, working with winemaker Richard Forman to manage ranching operations at Inglenook Winery. By 1999, he was described by Forman as "probably the premier viticulturist for premium grapes in Napa Valley." In 2006 Abreu was hired to replant vineyards at Screaming Eagle Winery and Vineyards. Malolactic conversion (also known as malolactic fermentation or MLF) is a process in winemaking in which Tart (flavor), tart-tasting malic acid, naturally present in grape must, is converted to softer-tasting lactic acid. The Duckhorn Portfolio Inc. is an American wine company producing varietal labelled and blended red, white, rosé, and sparkling wines from California and Washington State. The main winery, Duckhorn Vineyards, is outside St. Helena, California. History The company was founded by Daniel and Margaret Duckhorn as The St. Helena Wine Company in 1976 with eight co-investors. Newton Vineyard
Newton Vineyard is a wine estate on Spring Mountain near St. Helena in California's Napa Valley. Founded in 1977 by Peter Newton and his wife, it is now part of the Estates & Wines division of LVMH, which acquired a controlling interest in the business in 2001. It was extensively damaged in 2020's Glass Fire and in early 2025 announced it would be closing permanently.
