Riau Malays
Riau Malays (Jawi alphabet, Jawi: , ''Melayu Riau'') are a sub-group of Malays (ethnic group), Malays native to Riau and the Riau Islands province of eastern Sumatra, Indonesia. They only make up 29% of Riau Island population, while in Riau, they constitute a plurality, at around 45%. Riau Malays, especially in coastal Riau and Riau Islands, share the same or similar cultural, historical, and linguistic background with Johor, Johorean and Singaporean Malays, Singaporean Malays due to their common Malaccan origin in the 15th century. Etymology Malay (), derived from the word ''Malaya dvipa'' from the Hindu scripture ''Purana'' which means ''land surrounded by water'' which refers to a Melayu Kingdom, Old Malay Kingdom in Jambi in the 7th century. Siak River
The Siak (Sungai Siak) is a river of Riau province, in the east of Sumatra, Indonesia, about 1000 km northwest of the capital Jakarta. Approximately 370 kilometres in length, the Siak is a blackwater river which owes its brown color to dissolved organic matter (DOM) leached from surrounding, heavily disturbed peat soils; it is heavily polluted, notably by the petroleum industry. It flows through the town of Pekanbaru before emptying into the Strait of Malacca. Lingga Regency
The Lingga Regency () is a group of 600 islands in Indonesia, located south of Singapore and along both sides of the equator, off the eastern coast of Riau Province on Sumatra island. They are due south of the populated Riau Archipelago, known for the industrial island of Batam and the tourist-frequented island of Bintan, although the Lingga Islands themselves are rarely visited due to the infrequent local transportation. Raja Kecik
Raja Kecil (d. 1746), or Raja Kecik, also known as Sultan Abdul Jalil Rahmat Shah (r. 1722–1746), was the first sultan of the Sultanate of Siak Sri Indrapura. A controversial figure, due to his origin tales and the rebellion he led, Raja Kecil united a multi-ethnic force in eastern Sumatra to defeat the Johor Sultanate in 1718. He then ruled Johor for four years, before retreating to eastern Sumatra, where he established a new state along the Siak River in 1722. The rulership of Johor was then passed to Sultan Sulaiman under the heavy dominance of the Bugis elites headed by, among others, Daeng Marewa. Raja Kecil continued to oversee periodic attacks on Johor for another decade, while he consolidated control over trade routes between the Strait of Malacca and the resource-rich interior of Sumatra.
