Apocynaceae
Apocynaceae (, from '' Apocynum'', Greek for "dog-away") is a family of flowering plants that includes trees, shrubs, herbs, stem succulents, and vines, commonly known as the dogbane family, because some taxa were used as dog poison. Notable members of the family include oleander, dogbanes, milkweeds, and periwinkles. The family is native to the European, Asian, African, Australian, and American tropics or subtropics, with some temperate members as well. The former family Asclepiadaceae (now known as Asclepiadoideae) is considered a subfamily of Apocynaceae and contains 348 genera. A list of Apocynaceae genera may be found here. Many species are tall trees found in tropical forests, but some grow in tropical dry ( xeric) environments. Also perennial herbs from temperate zones occur. Many of these plants have milky latex, and many species are poisonous if ingested, the family being rich in genera containing alkaloids and cardiac glycosides, those containing the latter oft ...

Caralluma
''Caralluma'' is a genus of flowering plants in the family Apocynaceae, consisting of about 120 species. In 1795 William Roxburgh published the name '' Stapelia adscendens'' for a plant found in India. He commented that the name for the plant in the Telugu language was ''Car-allum'' and that the succulent branches are edible raw, though bitter and salty. The name ''Caralluma'' was coined by Robert Brown for a new genus in an article published in 1811. At the time he only described one species in the genus, the plant that he renamed '' Caralluma adscendens''. In 1996 Helmut Genaust published the suggestion that it was sensible to conclude that the generic name is derived from the Arabic phrase ''qahr al-luhum'', meaning "wound in the flesh" or "abscess," referring to the floral odour. Genaust was unaware that the genus ''Caralluma'' existed east of Palestine. He specifically ruled out its existence in India, where it was first described and named. Genaust presumed that the name ...

Pseudolithos
''Pseudolithos'' is a genus of succulent flowering plants of the family Apocynaceae, indigenous to arid areas of Somalia, Yemen and Oman. Description and naming The plants were first described as a genus in 1965; the name ''"Pseudo-lithos"'' means ''"false-stone"'' and refers to their pebble-like appearance. It was originally proposed as ''Lithocaulon'' earlier in 1956, but this name was already in use for a genus of fossil algae. All species in this genus are highly succulent, small in size, and exhibit tessellation on their stems' surface. Their small flowers appear on the spherical body's surface. ;Species Taxonomy Phylogenetic studies have shown the genus to be monophyletic, and most closely related to the widespread ''Caralluma'' stapeliads of North Africa. Marginally more distantly related is a sister branch comprising the genera ''Echidnopsis'' and ''Rhytidocaulon''.P. Bruyns, C. Klak, P. Hanacek: ''Evolution of the stapeliads (Apocynaceae-Asclepiadoideae) - repeated ...
