Rhodesian Grand Prix
The Rhodesian Grand Prix was an open-wheel motor race held in the 1960s and 70s, most often as a round of the South African Formula One Championship. During that time it played host to wide variety of racing cars, Formula One, Formula 5000, Formula Two, Formula Atlantic as well as locally created racing cars. Originally held on an airfield circuit in Belvedere, Salisbury, the race moved to another airfield circuit, the James McNeillie Circuit in Bulawayo for ten years. In 1971 the race moved to the purpose-built facility, the Breedon Everard Raceway in Bulawayo before moving to its final home at Donnybrook Raceway in Harare. Rhodesian driver John Love was the most accomplished, winning the race six times between 1963 and 1972. Donnybrook Raceway
The Donnybrook Raceway was a motor racing circuit in Harare. The circuit held the Rhodesian Grand Prix in 1974 and 1976. The circuit was opened in April 1974. Syd Van Der Vyver
Syd van der Vyver (1 June 1920 – 20 August 1989 in Pennington) was a racing driver from South Africa, who won the South African Drivers Championship in 1960 and 1961. Career After starting his motor sport career in speedway, van der Vyver switched to cars in the early 1950s, participating in both circuit racing and hillclimbing. He found success quickly, and by the end of the decade had established himself as one of the top drivers in the country. Brabham
Brabham () is the common name for Motor Racing Developments Ltd., a British racing car manufacturer and Formula One racing team. Founded in 1960 by Australian driver Jack Brabham and British-Australian designer Ron Tauranac, the team won four Drivers' and two Constructors' World Championships in its 30-year Formula One history. Jack Brabham's 1966 FIA Drivers' Championship remains the only such achievement using a car bearing the driver's own name. In the 1960s, Brabham was the world's largest manufacturer of open-wheel racing cars for sale to customer teams; by 1970 it had built more than 500 cars. Paul Hawkins (racing Driver)
Robert Paul Hawkins (12 October 1937 – 26 May 1969) was an Australian motor racing driver. The son of a racing motorcyclist-turned-church minister, Hawkins was a capable single-seater driver but really made his mark as an outstanding sports car competitor driving Ford GT40s and Lola T70s. In 1969 Hawkins was included in the FIA list of graded drivers, an elite group of 27 drivers who by their achievements were rated the best in the world. Coventry Climax
Coventry Climax was a British forklift truck, fire pump, racing, and other specialty engine manufacturer. History Pre WW1 The company was started in 1903 as Lee Stroyer, but two years later, following the departure of Stroyer, it was relocated to Paynes Lane, Coventry, and renamed as Coventry-Simplex by H. Pelham Lee, a former Daimler employee, who saw a need for competition in the nascent piston engine market. An early user was GWK, who produced over 1,000 light cars with Coventry-Simplex two-cylinder engines between 1911 and 1915. Just before the First World War, a Coventry-Simplex engine was used by Lionel Martin to power the first Aston Martin car. Gary Hocking
Gary Stuart Hocking MBE (30 September 1937 – 21 December 1962) was a Grand Prix motorcycle racing world champion who competed in the late 1950s and early 1960s based in Rhodesia. Early life Hocking was born in Caerleon, near Newport, Monmouthshire, in south-east Wales, but grew up in Southern Rhodesia (renamed Zimbabwe in 1980) where he attended Gifford High School. As a teenager, he began racing motorcycles on grass tracks. Before long, he had moved on to road racing circuits.
