Rhode Island Route 214
Route 214 is a state highway in the U.S. state of Rhode Island. Its southern terminus is at Route 138A in Middletown, and its northern terminus is at Route 114 in Middletown. Route description Route 214 begins at the intersection of Aquidneck Avenue, which carries Route 138A, and Valley Road in Middletown. Heading north on Valley Road, the highway parallels the eastern short of Green End Pond. North of the pond, the road passes through a residential area before reaching the Main Street commercial district at Route 138. From there, it continues to the north and northwest where it ends at Route 114 (Main Road). Middletown, Rhode Island
Middletown is a town in Newport County, Rhode Island, United States. The population was 17,075 at the 2020 census. It lies to the south of Portsmouth and to the north of Newport on Aquidneck Island, hence the name "Middletown". History Various issues including unjust taxation and a growing population caused the freeholders living in the northern section of Newport to petition the general assembly for independence. As a result of the petition, the land that Middletown occupies was set apart in 1731. The town was incorporated in 1743. During the 1980s, large sections of East Main Road and West Main Road running through Middletown began to be commercialized, and by the late 1990s, the area had become Aquidneck Island's central business district. Newport County is one of five counties located in the U.S. state of Rhode Island. As of the 2020 census, the population was 85,643. It is also one of the seven regions of Rhode Island. The county was created in 1703. Route 114 was a major north–south artery for its entire length until the arrival of the Interstate Highway System. Numbered Routes In Rhode Island
The U.S. state of Rhode Island has 70 state highways, coordinated and signed by the Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT). Most of these are partly or fully state highways, roads owned and maintained by RIDOT. Every city and town in Rhode Island, except for New Shoreham (Block Island), has at least one numbered route. History State highways in Rhode Island are signed with a standard square shield (for 2-digit routes) or a rectangular shield (for 3-digit routes), with black digits on a white background. The state initials of R.I. are placed above the number, as seen in the adjacent picture. The shields are similar to that of neighboring Massachusetts, though that state's route signs contain only the number. On some older highway signs, state route shields occasionally omit the "R.I." above the number, but most newer signage (particularly along I-95) features the state initials.
