Rhinoceros Hornbill
The rhinoceros hornbill (''Buceros rhinoceros'') is a large species of forest hornbill ( Bucerotidae). In captivity it can live for up to 35 years. It is found in lowland and montane, tropical and subtropical climates and in mountain rain forests up to 1,400 metres in Borneo, Sumatra, Java, the Malay Peninsula, Singapore, and southern Thailand. Taxonomy The rhinoceros hornbill was formally described by the Swedish naturalist Carl Linnaeus in 1758 in the tenth edition of his ''Systema Naturae''. He placed it with the great hornbill in the genus '' Buceros'' and coined the binomial name ''Buceros rhinoceros''. Linnaeus specified the location as India. The name comes from Ancient Greek βοῦς (''boûs''), meaning "ox", and κέρας (''kéras''), meaning "horn". The specific name ''rhinoceros'' comes from how the species' bill resembles a rhinoceros' horn. ''Buceros'', from Ancient Greek βοῦς (''boûs''), meaning "ox", and κέρας (''kéras''), meaning "horn", is a genus of large Asian hornbills (family Bucerotidae). Description Hornbills in the genus ''Buceros'' include some of the largest arboreal hornbills in the world, with the largest being the great hornbill. The helmeted hornbill (''Rhinoplax vigil'') is a very large bird in the hornbill family. It is found on the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, Borneo, Thailand and Myanmar. Louis Pierre Vieillot (10 May 1748, Yvetot – 24 August 1830, Sotteville-lès-Rouen) was a French ornithologist. Vieillot is the author of the first scientific descriptions and Linnaean names of a number of birds, including species he collected himself in the West Indies and North America and South American species discovered but not formally named by Félix de Azara and his translator Sonnini de Manoncourt. Hermann Schlegel (10 June 1804 – 17 January 1884) was a German ornithologist, herpetologist and ichthyologist. Early life and education Schlegel was born at Altenburg, the son of a brassfounder. His father collected butterflies, which stimulated Schlegel's interest in natural history. The discovery, by chance, of a buzzard's nest led him to the study of birds, and a meeting with Christian Ludwig Brehm. Schlegel started to work for his father, but soon tired of it.
