''Rez Ball'' is a 2024 American sports drama film directed by Sydney Freeland, who co-wrote the screenplay with Sterlin Harjo, based on the nonfiction sports novel ''Canyon Dreams: A Basketball Season on the Navajo Nation'', by ''The New York Times'' journalist Michael Powell. LeBron James served as one of the producers. The film features an ensemble cast, including Kauchani Bratt, Jessica Matten, Julia Jones, Amber Midthunder, and Kiowa Gordon. The Chuska Warriors, a Native American high school basketball team from Chuska, New Mexico, is competing for the state championship title while contending with losing their star player. The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 8, 2024, and was released on Netflix on September 27, 2024. Sydney Freeland
Sydney Freeland (born October 29, 1980) is a Native American filmmaker. She is a citizen of the Navajo Nation. She wrote and directed the film '' Drunktown's Finest'' (2014), which garnered numerous acclaims after premiering at the Sundance Film Festival. Her second film, '' Deidra & Laney Rob a Train'', debuted at Sundance and was released on Netflix in 2017; her third, '' Rez Ball'', released in 2024. Early life Freeland was born in Gallup, New Mexico, in 1980 to a Navajo father and a Scottish mother, and she was raised on a Navajo Reservation. Freeland attended Academy of Art University in San Francisco and earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in computer animation and a Master of Fine Arts in film. She is a 2004 Fulbright scholar, who focused her scholarship on a field study of Indigenous peoples in Ecuador. Pyramid Lake Paiute
The Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe Reservation () is an Indian Reservation in northwestern Nevada, approximately northeast of Reno, in Washoe, Storey, and Lyon counties. It is governed by the federally recognized Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe, which represents two Northern Paiute bands, the larger Kuyuidökadö (Cui Yui Ticutta) ("Cui-ui-Fish-Eaters") and the smaller Tasiget tuviwarai ("Those who live amidst the mountains"). The reservation lies almost entirely in Washoe County (99.88%), with small amounts of land in the other two counties (at the southern end, near the city of Fernley). In 1993, the population of the reservation was 1,603 individuals. At that time there were 2,253 enrolled members of the tribe. The 2000 census reported a population of 1,734 on the reservation.
