Reynolda Church
Reynolda Church (formerly Reynolda Presbyterian Church) is located on Brookfield Drive in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. It stands across Reynolda Road from Reynolda Village, of which it is considered a part. It was established in 1915 by Katharine Smith Reynolds, wife of R. J. Reynolds Richard Joshua Reynolds (July 20, 1850 – July 29, 1918) was an American businessman and founder of the R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company. Reynolds Memorial Auditorium formerly stood at the location, but it was rescued from demolition and moved to a site on the grounds of R. J. Reynolds High School. Katharine Smith Reynolds
Katharine Smith Reynolds (November 17, 1880 – May 23, 1924), later Katharine Smith Johnston, was the wife of tobacco Business magnate, tycoon R. J. Reynolds and a philanthropist who designed the Reynolda House estate. Early life Katharine Smith was born in Mount Airy, North Carolina. Smith was the oldest of six children of a prosperous local businessman, Zachary T. Smith and his wife, Mary Susan Jackson. She was well educated and attended the State Normal and Industrial School, now known as the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, in the fall of 1897. In late 1899, a typhoid epidemic broke out on the campus. The first student to die was freshman Linda Tom on November 15, and thirteen more would pass away in the next two months. 55 student were ultimately diagnosed, including Smith. Reynolda Village
Reynolda Village is a shopping and business complex in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, created from the servant and agricultural buildings of Reynolda, the former R. J. Reynolds estate. The village, which covers around , was planned as a working model farm, designed by Charles Barton Keen and Willard C. Northup in the early 20th century. It is now part of Reynolda Historic District, with twenty-two of its buildings, and one other contributing structure, now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Each building is constructed of matte green Ludowici-Celadon tile, cedar shingles painted green or asbestos shingles. The white exterior walls are mostly stucco on metal lathe, with a few having horizontal clapboard siding. The more substantial structures were built from fieldstone collected from the estate.
