Reykjavík Town Hall
Reykjavík's City Hall (; ) is situated by the Tjörnin (City Pond) in Reykjavík. It houses the offices of the mayor of Reykjavík and a large dimension, 3D map of Iceland. The city hall is sometimes used for art exhibitions, functions or live music performances. The building was constructed in 1992 following an international competition won by architects Studio Granda. Tjörnin
Tjörnin () is a small, prominent lake in central Reykjavík, the capital of Iceland. Most visitors to the city pass along its shore, as it is situated in the city centre next to the Reykjavik City Hall and several museums. ''Tjörnin'' means "the pond". Feeding the birds on the lake shores is a popular pastime, so much that it has been referred to as "the biggest bread soup in the world". Geography Tjörnin is described as a lagoon next to a barrier beach. The lake's formation is attributed to the lagoon which was part of a reef that existed at the present location of Hafnarstræti (a city street, "Harbour Street"). Studio Granda is a practice of architects based in Reykjavík, Iceland. It was founded in 1987 by partners Margrét Harðardóttir (1959, Reykjavík, Iceland) and Steve Christer (1960, Blackfyne, UK). They studied at the Architectural Association in London. Architectural philosophy Studio Granda's work is characterised by a respect for the traditional materials of Iceland - stone, sheet metal and timber - and with their sensitive awareness of local context can be linked to the Critical Regionalism school.
