Reykjavík Theatre Company
The Reykjavík Theatre Company (RTC) was founded in 1897 when two existing companies in Reykjavík combined, performing in the then newly built Iðnó (Craftsmens' House). With Indriði Einarsson (1851–1939) as its director, RTC became the fertile ground in which Iceland's professional theatre developed. Einarsson's dedication to professional theatre champion Sigurður Guðmundsson's (1833–1874) vision of a permanent National Theatre was key in the evolution of Iceland's professional theatre. History RTC was the birthplace of Icelandic theatre, eventually giving rise to Iceland's National Theatre in 1950. Some of Iceland's most renowned talent, like Stefanía Guðmundsdóttir (1876–1926), played the RTC stage. RTC has had many Directors over the years, including Einar H. Sigurður Guðmundsson
Sigurður Guðmundsson (born 20 September 1942) is an Icelandic artist. Early life and education Gudmundsson was born in Reykjavik, Iceland, the son of a frame-maker and art dealer Gudmundur Árnason and his wife Áslaug Sigurdardóttir and the brother of artist Kristján Guðmundsson. He studied at the Icelandic College of Arts and Crafts, Reykjavik and at the Academie '63 (later De Ateliers '63) in Haarlem. Life and work After returning to Iceland in 1966, with his wife and son, he became part of the Sύm group of artists, who had no single philosophy but shared characteristics with the international Fluxus movement and recognised the importance of a playful, innovative environment. Gudmundsson had his first solo show in February 1969 in Sύm's exhibition space Galerí Sύm. Gerd Grieg ( Egede-Nissen, 21 April 1895 – 9 August 1988) was a Norwegian stage and film actress. Biography She was born in Bergen, Norway. Her parents were Georga Wilhelma Ellertsen (1871–1959) and politician Adam Egede-Nissen (1868–1953). She had ten siblings, including Aud Egede-Nissen, Ada Kramm, Oscar Egede-Nissen, Stig Egede-Nissen, Lill Egede-Nissen, and Gøril Havrevold, who all became actors and actresses. Gerd Grieg made her acting début at the Nationaltheatret in 1910. In 1913 she appeared in several short silent films made by Danish film director, August Blom (1869–1947). In 1917, she began her five years in Berlin to record films for the film company of her sister Aud Egede-Nissen. She returned to Norway in 1922 and to the Nationaltheatret in 1928. Sveinn Einarsson
Sveinn Einarsson (born September 18, 1934) is most known for championing and cultivating professional theatre in Iceland. He was the stage director of more than 70 productions, operas, classics and modern plays, including several world premieres in Iceland and other countries. Career Sveinn was artistic director of The Reykjavík Theatre Company (RTC) from 1963 to 1972 and director of the National Theatre of Iceland from 1972 to 1983. He also served as counsellor for the Ministry of Culture of Iceland from 1983 to 1989 and program head at Icelandic television from 1989 to 1993.
