Rexburg Stake Tabernacle
The Rexburg Stake Tabernacle, also known as the Fremont Stake Tabernacle is a building located in Rexburg, Idaho that formerly served as LDS Tabernacle, tabernacle for large gatherings of members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The tabernacle was designed by architect Otto Erlandsen and completed in 1911 at a cost of $31,000. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. In 1980, the building was sold to the city of Rexburg and now serves as a civic center and is home of the Rexburg Children's Choir. In 2020, the Rexburg Tabernacle was visible to a nationwide audience when ''NBC Nightly News'' and ''Inside Edition'' highlighted the children's choir's ability to persist during the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States, COVID-19 pandemic. Rexburg is a city in Madison County, Idaho, United States. The population was 39,409 at the 2020 United States census, 2020 census. The city is the county seat of Madison County and its largest city. Rexburg is the principal city of the Rexburg micropolitan area, which includes Fremont County, Idaho, Fremont and Madison counties. The city is home to Brigham Young University–Idaho (BYU-Idaho), a private institution operated by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). History The city takes its name from founder Thomas E. Ricks (Mormon pioneer), Thomas Edwin Ricks. The city was incorporated in 1883. The Navy Electronics Laboratory oceanographic research ship USS Rexburg, USS ''Rexburg'' was named for the city. In June 1976, Rexburg was severely damaged by the Teton Dam, Teton Dam Flood. Otto Erlandsen
Otto Bernhard Erlandson (September 20, 1867 – October 11, 1959) was a Swedish-American builder and architect in the Intermountain West in the early-20th century. Erlandson was born a son of Elias and Kjersti (Lundstett) Erlandson in Malmo, Sweden. His brother was Henry Erlandson (b. 1875). The family emigrated to Utah Territory with his parents and siblings in 1870 as converts to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). He was schooled in Payson, Utah and took mechanical drawing classes at Utah State University. Erlandsen's most notable designs were the Rexburg Stake Tabernacle, Rexburg and Nebo Stake Tabernacle, Nebo Stake Tabernacles for the LDS Church. Rexburg Stake Tabernacle (now Rexburg Tabernacle Community Center) is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Nebo Stake Tabernacle was demolished in the 1980s.
