Railroad Valley is one of the Central Nevada Desert Basins in the Tonopah Basin and is about long north–south and up to wide, with some southern areas running southwest to northeast. Lunar Crater Volcanic Field
Lunar Crater volcanic field is a volcanic field in Nye County, Nevada. It lies along the Reveille and Pancake Ranges and consists of over 200 vents, mostly small volcanic cones with associated lava flows but also several maars, including one maar named Lunar Crater. Some vents have been eroded so heavily that the structures underneath the volcanoes have been exposed. Lunar Crater itself has been used as a testing ground for Mars rovers and as training ground for astronauts. The volcanic field has formed on top of older, Oligocene-to-Miocene-age volcanic rocks and calderas, but its own activity commenced only about 6 million years ago. The reasons for the volcanic activity there are not well known. Lunar Crater National Natural Landmark
Lunar Crater National Natural Landmark recognizes the Lunar Crater volcanic field in Nye County, central Nevada, as a United States National Natural Landmark. It is located east-northeast of Tonopah and was designated in 1973. Volcanic features The volcanic field encompasses numerous volcanic craters and cinder cones, including a crater that is thought to have been formed by several volcanic explosions and is one of the field's two maars. Astronaut training In September 1972, Lunar Crater was used by NASA to train astronauts of the Apollo program in recognizing geological and volcanic features expected on the Moon. Warm Springs, Nevada
Warm Springs is a former town in the Tonopah Basin in Nye County, Nevada, near the mountain pass which divides the Kawich and Hot Creek ranges (at ). It is located at the junction of U.S. Route 6 and State Route 375 (the "Extraterrestrial Highway"), around 50 miles east of Tonopah. Only two abandoned buildings remain. History The first white settlement in Warm Springs was in 1866, when it served as a stopover for stagecoaches and other travellers. The post office was in operation from January 1924 through June 1929. The population was 9 in 1940. In 1947, the springs was purchased by the Fallini brothers and it was reported that Thomas Hurt had been operating the springs for several years. Nevada State Route 375
State Route 375 (SR 375) is a state highway in Nye and Lincoln counties in south-central Nevada, United States. The highway stretches from State Route 318 at Crystal Springs northwest to U.S. Route 6 (US 6) at Warm Springs. The route travels through mostly unoccupied desert terrain, with much of its alignment paralleling the northern edges of the Nellis Air Force Range. The road originally traversed through what is now the northern reaches of the air force range in the 1930s, when it was previously designated State Route 25A and later part of State Route 25. The top-secret Area 51 government base is near SR 375, and many travelers have reported UFO observations and other strange alien activity along this road. Quinn Canyon Range
The Quinn Canyon Range is a remote group of mountains in northeastern Nye County, and western Lincoln County in central Nevada in the western United States. Adaven is the only settlement in the mountains, now abandoned. It is closely associated with the Grant Range, which connects to it at the mountain pass of Cherry Creek Summit .
