Rev (Ultra Vivid Scene Album)
''Rev'' is an album by the American band Ultra Vivid Scene, released in 1992. It was the band's third and final album. The single, an edited "Blood and Thunder", reached number 27 on the '' Billboard'' Modern Rock Tracks chart. Ultra Vivid Scene supported the album by touring with Grant Lee Buffalo. Production The album was produced by Kurt Ralske and Fred Maher. Unlike previous albums, Ralske recorded ''Rev'' with many other musicians instead of just going it alone. Ralske often wrote lyrics while still mostly asleep as he preferred the "naturalness" of the process. "Mirror to Mirror" is about materialism. Critical reception ''The Washington Post'' praised the "elegance" of the album. The ''Toronto Star'' wrote that ''Rev'' "has Nick Drake-like melodies, T. Rex-ish riffs, ethereal sliding guitar licks, restless rhythms, silences and explosions." Ultra Vivid Scene
Ultra Vivid Scene was an American alternative rock band, started by Kurt Ralske. Background Former Nothing But Happiness and Crash guitarist Ralske started Ultra Vivid Scene in 1986,https://www.discogs.com/release/6488943-Ultra-Vivid-Scene-Slow-You-Down-Totally-Free releasing the 7" single "Slow You Down / Totally Free" on Justine Records, in 1986. He was signed to 4AD Records in 1988, and released his first UVS EP, ''She Screamed'', in 1988. The conga, also known as tumbadora, is a tall, narrow, single-headed drum from Cuba. Congas are staved like barrels and classified into three types: quinto (lead drum, highest), tres dos or tres golpes (middle), and tumba or salidor (lowest). Congas were originally used in Afro-Cuban music genres such as conga (hence their name) and rumba, where each drummer would play a single drum. Julia Kent
Julia Kent is a Canadian cellist and composer from Vancouver, Canada, and based in New York City, United States. She has performed as a member of Rasputina and with Antony and the Johnsons. Musical career Kent creates music using looped cello, found sounds, and electronics. In 2007, she released her first solo album, ''Delay'', on Important Records. An EP, ''Last Day in July'', was released in 2010, and a second full-length record, ''Green and Grey'', in 2011, on Tin Angel. Melora Creager
Melora Creager (born March 25, 1966) is an American cellist, singer-songwriter, performing artist and founder of the rock band Rasputina. Early life, beginnings and Rasputina Born in Kansas City, Missouri, and adopted by a graphic designer and physicist, Creager was raised in Emporia, Kansas. She started studying music at the age of 5, and at age 9 began playing the cello. As a child she was also a member of the Wichita Youth Symphony. Though she briefly quit playing in her teen years, after Creager moved to the east coast to attend Philadelphia College of Art and Parsons School of Design, she was convinced by friends to take it up again. Rasputina (band)
Rasputina is an American rock band based in New York City, known for an unconventional music style, as well as a fascination with historical allegories and fashion, especially those pertaining to the Victorian era. The group is fronted by cellist/vocalist Melora Creager, who writes the music and lyrics and creates art for the band's albums, singles, and website. History In 1989, Creager wrote a manifesto, and placed an ad in The Village Voice seeking women to form an electric cello choir. Julia Kent, then an editor at the Village Voice, was the first respondent. The original group of nine was whittled to three. They named themselves "Rasputina", after one of Creager's songs.
