''Retrophyllum minus'', the ''bois bouchon'', is a species of conifer in the family Podocarpaceae. It is endemic to New Caledonia. Description It is a sparsely branched small tree rarely exceeding ten feet (three meters in height) with a flared trunk remindful of Bald Cypress and water Tupelo which tapers towards the top and has rough bark. It produces pear-shaped fruits that are dark-red when mature. Habitat The species occurs near rivers and lakes of the Plaine des Lakes in the south of Grande Terre. It is a rheophyte (grows in running water), the only such conifer known. Élie-Abel Carrière (4 June 1818 – 17 August 1896) was a French botanist, based in Paris. He was a leading authority on Pinophyta, conifers in the period 1850–1870, describing many new species, and the new genera ''Tsuga'', ''Keteleeria'' and ''Douglas-fir, Pseudotsuga''. A rheophyte is a plant that lives in fast moving water currents in an environment where few other organisms can survive. Rheophytes tend to be found in currents that move at rates of one to two meters per second and that are up to 1 to 2 m deep. The amount of force produced by these currents, and the damaging debris they can carry, makes this environment inhospitable to most plants. In September 2016, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) listed 3654 endangered plant species. Of all evaluated plant species, 17% are listed as endangered. The IUCN also lists 99 subspecies and 101 varieties as endangered. No subpopulations of plants have been evaluated by the IUCN. For a species to be considered endangered by the IUCN it must meet certain quantitative criteria which are designed to classify taxa facing "a very high risk of extinction".
