Reserve Military Training Units
Reserve Military Training Units (RMTU) are a component of the reserve forces of North Korea. Overview The RMTU, which was formed in 1963 consist of 17- to 50-year-old males and 17- to 30-year-old females who finished their mandatory military service in the Korean People's Army or do not serve for some reason. When males reach age 46, they are assigned to the Worker-Peasant Red Guards. The RTMU contains between 600,000 and 620,000 members in 37 RMTU divisions. The RMTU keeps the highest level of training among North Korea's reserve forces and its members are requested to have at least 500 of intensive annual training. According to some sources, the RMTU are under the control of the Ministry of Defense in both peace and emergency state which controls them from the General Staff through the corps headquarters to their subordinated RMTU units. Military Reserve Force
A military reserve force is a military organization whose members have military and civilian occupations. They are not normally kept under arms, and their main role is to be available when their military requires additional manpower. Reserve forces are generally considered part of a permanent standing body of armed forces, and allow a nation to reduce its peacetime military expenditures and maintain a force prepared for war. In countries with a volunteer military, such as Canada, Spain, the United States and the United Kingdom, reserve forces are civilians who maintain military skills by training periodically (typically one weekend per month). Korean People's Army
The Korean People's Army (KPA; ) is the military force of North Korea and the armed wing of the Workers' Party of Korea (WPK). Under the '' Songun'' policy, it is the central institution of North Korean society. Currently, WPK General Secretary Kim Jong-un serves as Supreme Commander and the chairman of the WPK Central Military Commission. Worker-Peasant Red Guards
The Worker-Peasant Red Guards (WPRG; ), also translated as Workers and Peasants' Red Militia (WPRM), is a paramilitary force in North Korea. It is the largest civil defense force in North Korea. It was established on 14 January 1959 by Kim Il-sung and is not only under State Affairs Commission (until 2016 National Defense Commission) and Ministry of Defense control, but is also attached to the Workers' Party of Korea under its Military Leadership Department. It is thus responsible to the Supreme Leader in his capacity as Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces. Social Security Forces
Social Security Forces ( ko, 조선사회안전군) is a North Korean paramilitary force which performs various internal security and border security tasks. It has 11,000 to 140,000 troops. The Social Security Ministry and the State Security Department are responsible for internal security in North Korea. Although both are government organs, they are tightly controlled by the party apparatus through the Justice and Security Commission and the penetration of their structures by the party apparatus at all levels. Red Youth Guards ( ko, 붉은청년근위대) is North Korea's youth paramilitary organization. The Red Youth Guard official anniversary is September 12, 1970. It was established under the direction of Kim Il-sung and is acting as a student military organization targeting male and female students aged 14 to 16 at the time.
