The Republican Party of Moldova () is a political party in Moldova. History Republican Party of Moldova (RPM) was established on 15 August 1999. The Founding Congress adopted the party program and bylaws and elected the governing bodies, including the Party Chairperson, Ion Curtean. In the 5 April 2009 legislative elections, it did not pass the election threshold as it polled 0.09% of the vote. Before the early parliamentary elections of 29 July 2009, it withdrew from the race and campaigned for the Democratic Party of Moldova. Former Minister of Foreign Affairs Andrei Stratan was elected leader of the Republican Party at the 1 August 2010 congress of the party by a unanimous vote. The party's former chairman Ion Curtean and vice chairman Valerian Hortolomei remained to work as part of the party, but it is not yet known what posts they will hold. April 2009 Moldovan Parliamentary Election
Parliamentary elections were held in Moldova on 5 April 2009. The Party of Communists of the Republic of Moldova (PCRM) won a majority of seats (60 out of 101) for the third consecutive occasion. Turnout was 59%, exceeding the 50% necessary for the election to be valid. Following the elections, Parliament was required to elect a new President of Moldova as the incumbent Vladimir Voronin had to stand down after completing two terms. Presidential elections required the winning candidate to receive at least 61 votes, but the opposition parties refused to vote for the three PCRM-nominated candidates in Moldovan presidential election, May–June 2009, three rounds of voting between May and June 2009, meaning no president was elected. 2010 Moldovan Constitutional Referendum
A nationwide referendum was held in Moldova on 5 September 2010 on whether or not the country should amend the Constitution of Moldova (1994), Constitution of Moldova to return to direct popular election of the president. Since 2001, the president had been indirectly elected by Parliament, with a supermajority of 61 seats (three-fifths of the membership) required for election. The voters are asked to answer the following question: "Would you agree with the Constitutional amendment, which would allow the election of the President of the Republic of Moldova by the entire population?" Voters chose one of the proposed options: "Yes (for)" or "No (against)". Of those who had cast their vote, 87.83% chose "Yes".
