Moena ( Ladin: ''Moéna'') is a ''comune'' (municipality) and a village in Trentino in the northern Italian region Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol, located about northeast of Trento. It is the largest comune in the Fassa Valley. In the census of 2001, 1,967 inhabitants out of 2,602 (75.6%) declared Ladin as their native language. Geography Moena lies on the Avisio, a tributary of the Adige river. The municipality borders with Falcade, Nova Levante, Sèn Jan di Fassa, Predazzo, Soraga and Tonadico. It counts the hamlets (''frazioni'') of Forno, Medil, San Pellegrino, Penia, Someda and Sorte. The 1972 Winter Olympics, officially the and commonly known as Sapporo 1972 (), were a winter multi-sport event held from February 3 to 13, 1972, in Sapporo, Hokkaido Prefecture, Japan. It was the first Winter Olympic Games to take place outside Europe and North America. Host city selection Sapporo first won the rights to host the 1940 Winter Olympics, but Japan resigned as the Games' host after its Second Sino-Japanese War, 1937 invasion of China. The 1940 Games were later cancelled. All the cities awarded Games that were cancelled due to war have since hosted the Games (London, Tokyo, Helsinki, Sapporo and Cortina d'Ampezzo). The games were awarded to Innsbruck after Denver, the original host city, withdrew in 1972. This was the second time the Tyrolean capital had hosted the Winter Olympics, having first done so in 1964. Ladin People
The Ladins are an ethnolinguistic group of northern Italy. They are distributed in several valleys, collectively known as Ladinia. Skiing is the use of skis to glide on snow for basic transport, a recreational activity, or a competitive winter sport.
