Renton Thistle Football Club was an association football club based in the town of Renton, in Dunbartonshire. History The club was founded in 1873, in the wake of other clubs in the West Dunbartonshire area such as Vale of Leven, Renton, and Dumbarton. The club entered the Scottish Cup for the first time in 1875–76, and gained a walkover in the first round after opponents Queen's Park Juniors scratched. In the second round the Thistle lost 2–1 at Dumbarton. With other clubs in the region having greater backing, the club remained firmly in their shadows, and only ever won one Scottish Cup tie; against Alclutha in the first round in 1877–78. A bye took the club into the third round for the only time in its history, where it lost to Renton 2–0. The Vale of Leven (Scottish Gaelic: ''Magh Leamhna'') is an area of West Dunbartonshire, Scotland, in the valley of the River Leven. Historically, it was part of The Lennox, the name of which derives from the Gaelic term ''Leamhnach'', meaning ''field of the Leven''. ''Leamnha'' is thought to mean elm-water. Geographically the valley of the Vale of Leven runs from Loch Lomond in the north to Dumbarton in the south. However, the term "Vale of Leven" or just "The Vale" is commonly used locally to refer to the urban area towards the north of the valley that consists of a number of communities. Renton Railway Station
Renton railway station is a railway station serving the village of Renton, Scotland. The station is managed by ScotRail and is served by its trains on the North Clyde Line. It is sited northwest of (High Level), measured via Singer and Maryhill, between Alexandria and Dalreoch, on the line to Balloch. History It was opened in July 1850 by the Caledonian and Dumbartonshire Junction Railway on its line from (on the north bank of the River Clyde) to . Through running to Glasgow did not commence until 1858, when the Glasgow, Dumbarton and Helensburgh Railway was opened; before this travellers had to transfer to steamships at Bowling to continue their journey southwards. The line through the station used to be double, but was reduced to single track around 1986. 1879–80 Scottish Cup
The 1879–80 Scottish Cup – officially the Scottish Football Association Challenge Cup – was the seventh season of Scotland's most prestigious football knockout competition. With 142 entrants, this season saw the largest number of teams to compete for the trophy since its inception. Three-time defending champions Vale of Leven lost their first match in the competition for four seasons when they were knocked out in the first round, losing 4–3 to rivals Dumbarton. Queen's Park regained the trophy as they won the competition for the fourth time after beating Thornliebank 3–0 in the final on 21 February 1880. Format As with the previous competitions, the seventh edition of the Scottish Cup took on the format of a traditional knockout tournament.
